I think you will see the 1% change in the GST promised immediately (as soon as they form government). I think you will see some sort of Politcian Accountability Act put in place. You will see some changes in the fiscal imbalance.

Prime Minister Harper needs to really follow his platform for any chance of winning a majority next election. He also needs to keep the extreme social conservatives quiet.

I think this was a good result but given the number of seats everyone has it will be interesting to se how long it lasts there is no clear path for an alliance...

i've been a conservative supporter since i could vote.
I can see more changes with a conservative minority then if a liberal one came into power again.

+ IMO its better to to have 1 of each party (conservative / liberal ) in power either on a federal or provincial level, not 1 party on both levels.

yes, the block is very conservative, and I heard that they decide who they are going to support on a issue to issue basese.

I agree, I think mike harris did a good job also, despite what the public school teachers had us believe...

the BQ is conservative but they are also all about quebec if it isn't good for quebec they won't go for it. this is an issue for Harper who is all about the west. Also the fact that most of the ground harper made up in Quebec was at the expense of the BQ I don't think the BQ can really support the Conservatives all that much. of course a few things will be passed with the support of the BQ like the GST thing. but the liberals and NDP will still be a large force to deal with. not all seats are always filled in the house ... the good thing is all the guys in Ottawa will have to earn their pay by sitting in their seats in the house.

In my opinion nothing really changed except the title. Overall with the minority goverment I don't expect to see any major changes. I hope some of what Harper promised will be implemented, but given his probable short term in office it will be quite difficult. Although I didn't vote for him, best of luck Harper! I hope something positive will come of all this.

I think its a good change, the Liberals have been in power a long time now and its time to hand it over and see what the Conservatives can do (if anything) for us. Like a couple people are already predicting, if things dont go over well there will be an election in 1.5-2.5 years and we can all make a decision if power should be shifted back to the liberals or another party.

yeah, i give it another year, 2 at most.

i doubt harper will be able to do most of the things promised during the election because it is a minority gov't. i think he knew that and played his cards right. now even if he doesn't lower the gst, he can say he tried to but couldn't b/c he doesn't have enough seats.

i must admit that i was extremely afraid of harper and still am, however i'm starting to see the situation a little differently. with harper in power, atleast for now, the west has shut up about leaving canada and quebec is paying full attention to us. if harper is careful, he may be able to come out of this with a stronger, more unified canada by including the west (who feel left out) and giving quebec the attention they desire.

my immediate concerns however, is his stance on same-sex marriages and the womens right to an abortion. oh, and whether he'll be putting mike harris' goons into cabinet positions.

I believe Harper said he was going to have a free vote in the house for the same sex marriage issue, I think thats pretty fair...

i have a few friends who dont really know much at all about this kind of stuff (only from heresay from other idiots and a little bit of news)

not only that, some people i know consider him george bush. I dont see any similarities other than the liberal commercial calling him pro iraq-war. It got put into peoples heads that if the country is under conservative power, canada will now be entering the war (the one we already peace-keep in)...which is not the case at all.

I'm really holding him to his promises of deportation of immigrant criminals, closing all of the loopholes in child pornography cases, and the so called partnership with the rest of canada. Its sad to say but people living in other provinces feel left out thinking that ontario = canada

its just that the Conservatives are getting rid of alot, importantly the nationwide daycare program and Kyoto to start.

PC + Bloc has more then 50% of the seats, so even with members missing, as long as Harper gives some things to the Bloc....he will get his **** passed. Bloc dosen't care about Canada, only Quebec, so the Bloc will not vote against **** he wants as long as the Bloc gets a deal...this is not a good thing, when Liberals and NDP care about the rest of Canada.

I say **** the Bloc, I want to see a party called FTB (**** the bloc) who'd only goal is too vote against everything the Bloc wants. If Quebec wants their interests met, do it the same way Ontario, BC, AB, etc does.

I just hope Harper keeps cities in mind like Toronto, etc and dosen't **** up to many things. Bottom line, we are ****ed either way. Harper is an idiot and Bush will like him, Martin is a liar and lead a crooked gov't, Layton will spend like mad on social programs...not exactly a bad thing.

We'll be voting again in 1-1.5 years anyways.

Oh, and I'd like to see proportional representation, it'd mean more fair seats per votes.

if we had all seats decided on by the popular vote the Bloc would only have 15% of the seats and basically be a fringe party. We'd see parties like the Green party have a few seats.

of course the down side is no Independants would get to sit int he house and where do you draw the line on whether you get a seat or not? your party might get enough votes for 0.9 of a seat.. does that mean it gets rounded up or you get to sit out.

ohhh well if this was the case Liberals and Tories would be closer in seat count NDP would have more seats and the bloc less and the green party would have a few seats too.
