I dont understand why you think you are better than everyone else? The chances of it screwing up the instruments on an airplane are very small, but why should you be the one to take a chance on everyones life on the plane.
As for the doctors office and everywhere like that, I dont understand why you cant just put your phone on viberate or silent mode, that way no one gets bothered and you still see who is calling you?

Airplanes, the cell is off, I'll talk when I'm back on terra firma.

Hospitals, it generally stays off and then I'll go to the waiting room to check msgs or outside to make calls.

There is call answer & text messaging, if something is important enough...meh, I just check it at intervals.

i don't think i've been proven wrong... maybe with equipment from the 90s... you're supposed to get a cellphone every 6 months... how can anyone have an old one?!

my phone is always on vibrate only, and i specifically wanted to disrespect my university and the extra year and a half of bull**** i had to go through because the one department head took a sabbatical and the other guy decided he didn't want to tell the dean that he approved a course change for me even though i had it in email. i actually got into 4 'discussions' on stage once i picked up my diploma and decided to leave right after... the final woman gave me the most ****.. i asked if she wanted a scene on stage or not.. she let me pass..... i wish i was talking on my phone at the same time.

there is no need to shut off a phone on planes.. it can interfere with stuff below.. the way i look at it, the other way around, they are interfering with my phone. if there was the slightest chance it could affect the flight, you think they'd let you take it on? You're not allowed a lighter or a pack of matches...

no it's not. It's about taking a step to avoid a *potential* hazard, as minimal as it may be.

a *potential* hazard is telling the wrong person to turn their phone off because you worry about things to the nth degree.

as this old sexist guy i know would say "what are we, a bunch of women?"

you chose to go on the plane so you should respect the rules or dont go on it. You saying they are inturrupting my phone shows that you are self center arrogant person.

Cell phones usually don't work at high altitudes.

which is exactly why it doesnt make a difference whether it is off or not.. if it could have any potential negative effect on the airplane, they would confistace them like they confiscate knives and corkscrews

It's just common courtesy. I don't even answer the phone if I'm at a cash register, or a bank teller... it's just rude. A lot of people lack common courtesy and politeness these days.
