Also bad grinding noises can follow....

Working with 6011 rod sucks, damn hard to get a good arc going with my welder.. oh well, 6013 here we come...

i dont even remember stick welding rod codes....

if you aren't getting good arc though it could be that the rod is to thick for the amperage your welder can produce maybe? or maybe the rods have to much moisture

The 6011 are the same thickness as the 6013, so it could be amperage related since I have a small welder. The 6013 is fine with me - does the job. I just thought the 6011 would give me a nicer bead..ahh c'est la vie.

looked through my notes... this should help

the 6011 electrode means 60 000 psi tensile str of the weld, first 1 means it can be used in all positions and the last 1 means its designed for AC mode... i can't remember if your welder can change polarity?? but if you ran it on AC mode it should work better

the 6013 is basically the same except the last number means is can run at a lower open circuit voltage (good in your case) and can be used on AC or DC- modes

Yep...that makes perfect sense..My welder is pretty damn basic - no polarity changing. Oh well, $7.99 down the tubes - you have a need for 6011? You can have them if you want...

nah no use from me... do you know what polarity your welder does run on?

actually it 6013 works good then its probably dc-

just for reference these are all the electrode codes that you can use...

6012 - coating has titanium oxide, suitable for all positions but prefered for flat and horozontal

6013 - similar to 6012, but with suitable use in low voltages

6014 - similar to 6013, supposedly more efficient, coating contains iron powder

ac only back to the drawing board... that opens a lot of options with electrodes though

actually i'm confused as to why the one electrode wouldn't work now though

It's because my welder is not adjustable when it comes to amperage. It's about 50 amps, and I do think this aspect comes into play as 6013 needs lesser charge to use than 6011. I think maybe the diameter and length of the rod could be a factor. Maybe a thinner, small stock I could use. Hmmmmmm..

it wouldn't be the length but the width is quite possible... but i dont know how much thinner the rods can go really... cause what you have produces a 60 000 psi tensile str weld... i can't imagine they'd go down to past 4013... cause that is getting weaker then aluminum welds

but ya it is probably the lower required voltage thing
