Heavily-armed officers spent hours combing an Oakville plaza looking for at least one suspect involved in a home invasion and apparent jewellery store heist.
Authorities abandoned their search for the bandits at the Old Oakville Market at Trafalgar and Cornwall Roads just before 7am Tuesday following a 12-hour ordeal that included a home invasion, jewellery store robbery and a lockdown.
It all started around 6:45pm Monday when a man stormed a couple's Burlington home and reportedly stole the keys to their business, Knar Jewellery, and the keys to their vehicle.
The two victims managed to free themselves and ran down their street in a panic pleading for someone to call 9-1-1.
Police then spotted the victims' vehicle outside the plaza and began the search for the suspect and possible accomplices, which led authorities to place the mall in lockdown. Some customers were kept inside the shops for up to three hours.
The search ended Tuesday morning and according to some witnesses on scene, there is speculation the bandits may have escaped through ceiling tiles.
Trafalgar and Cornwall Roads, which were closed overnight, reopened Tuesday morning.
