Funny how different it is depending on what era you grew up in. Seeing that when I grew up as a kid was in the 70's and being a teen in the late 70's to early 80's, just having a car period was cool. It didn't matter if it was a rust bucket or if it was new, if you had a car, you were gold. I had friends that had 70's cars and at that time was the second hand cars of the times. My first car was my parent's 78 Buick Regal, with the rear bumper falling off and was on it's second engine as well. I loved that car and to me, I should have never gotten rid of it. Only when I became permenant at the bank, my dad suggested buying a brand new car. So thinking I should buy something cheap, I bought a Ford Escort (big mistake).

To me, back then it was simple, no one really cared how much money you made, or what car you drove, we just had fun. Then again, I also grew up in Montreal, so that may have something to do with it as well.
