Global warming is a fact, the question is, did mankind cause it.

I think the question is moot because in either case, it's just not good to pollute. we know that we ARE responsible for acid rain, toxic waste, groundwater contamination, and many other things.. just because the planet may already be warming up on its own, is that an excuse to ****** crap everywhere instead of doing the right thing?

but if you really want to know the answer, i think we have some responsibility for it, either making it worse or making it happen faster. i mean, it's so easy to affect the environment. DDT and PCBs still show up because they are so difficult to break down, acid rain is just a fact (it's mostly caused by coal burning power plants), and the whole Walkerton nonsense (anyone remember that?) was likely caused by immense cattle farms with irresponsible disposal of cow crap, causing e.coli to run into the supply for well water (though it would have helped to have better water treatment).

Global Warming is going to be the biggest issue my generation and the one after it will have to deal with. Humans have big choices to make however most will not want to downsize there lives

anyway back to global warming

i for one think its a serious problem thats being hugely overlooked, not enough people are aware of how serious an issue it is.

very well put IMO...

is mankind solely responsible for the warming? i think it's doubtful... i'm sure we don't help the cause... but the earth has cycles of warming/cooling etc... back when the ice age happened we didn't have any technology etc... weren't causing stuff... the earth heated up on it's own without us polluting etc...

that being said although we are clearly in a warming cycle, we're still treating the earth like a piece of garbage and that should definitely stop...but again it becomes a fine balance between enjoying our comforts of civilization and being 'green'...

just as many arguments as there are promoting global warming as being the fault of human society, there are arguments against mankind causing global warming...

for example... the US absorbs 1/3 more carbon dioxide than it produces... that's a fact i read in a scientific peer reviewed journal (i can find sources for those that really care that much... not like it'll change ur mind tho) does anyone talk about that ? no...

to me saying humans caused the whole earth to get warmer is like saying the temperature in scarborough went up by 1 degree because Terry forgot a window open all winter while he was heating his apartment...

also don't get me started on the issue that while cities are getting warmer it might be because we have more people living within a physical area...

this debate could go on forever, as both sides have strong feelings about it...

don't forget tho... people don't do stuff just because they care... there's money behind everything... currently there's ALOT of money behind the global warming side of things... for NUMEROUS reasons

1. environmental science isn't something as basic and simple as chemistry. There are a number of factors that have to be analysed for any change.

2. Ever think the world is naturally coming out of the ice age still? And we'll maybe eventually go back into it? (Remember, the earth is far older than 1,000,000 years old.)

3. The ozone layer actually protects us from radiation from the sun.

4. There are a number of ways to reduce pollution. ie solar panels in the dessert, using more than just a flat surface to maximize polution free power.

George Bush wouldn't be happy though, his sons retirement fund will all be from oil with Bin Laden's family. (Let's face it, I don't think George W Bush even knows what 'oil' is.)

5. Is there anything we can do to cool the Earth up (ie - magma) and in doing so, might we cause much more harm than good.

6. Would it be really that bad for us in Toronto? I wouldn't mind palm trees and monkeys in my backyard. My property is on the Canadian shield.... my guess is, that it will float if we have a big flood.

----

All this aside, I'm pretty sure we'll have a zombie plague which will wipe out much of human society far before any large scale desctrucion due to the environment.

Hey Alex,

I'd love to know where you got that Source for the USA CO2 figures. I'd find that very interesting to read.

I do think that Global warming is caused directly by the industrial revolution. Sure it started some 200 years ago. but it's taken time to build up to this. Not all Warming is caused by CO2 there are other Green house gases (with Water being one of the most effective, in the gaseous state it reflects more heat then any other molecule and in the Solid State (ice) it reflects more Solar energy then any other molecule ) The other Green house gases like Sulpher Dioxide are not taken out of the atmosphere as easily as CO2 is. For CO2 we have a system of plants removing it and animals creating it. However CO2 levels are rising, Why? because of a few things, like deforestation and creating CO2 in other ways then just breathing.

Another major factor in rising CO2 levels that is often overlooked is acid rain, Acid rain changes the acidic levels in the soils. this results in trees having a harder time to grow, in the Bancroft area for example that gets hit with the acid rain from the Ohio valley, Tree Growth is 30% less then what it should be at the current age of the trees. The less a tree grows in a year the less Carbon it takes out of the atmosphere.

Anyways Alex, thank you for cleaning up an important topic
