orange juice

I was looking at my can of orange juice today and noticing that the writing on the can says 100% juice.

However, the juice was awefully sweet.

I know that genetically modified foods do not have to be labelled (at least in Canada).

So what is stopping farmers from growing genetically modified oranges that have been crossed with sugar-producing genes?

...and, at what point does an orange stop being an orange after it has been modified?

(It all reminds me of the Tomacco episode of the Simpsons.)

I don't think 100% juice means that nothing is added does it?

100% juice i thought just means that its made from real juice and not concentrate or artificial flavours or whatever.

A beverage cannot be branded with the word "juice" unless it is 100% juice.
Otherwise, it has to be called 'cocktail' or 'punch' etc. Its the law for juice beverages.
So the beverage you were drinking was real juice, nothing added.

how do you know their juice or orange supplier isn't called "100% juice"?

It works for McD's right.

True, but it may not have been all orange juice.

The base for alot of juices is apple juice, it's less expensive and more widely available than most other juices...

And the juice can be marked 100% juice because its still all juice, just not 100% orange juice.

What if it says cocktail as the product name but says 27% juice above it?

I've heard this, too.
I think it's a 'fruit beverage' or 'fruit drink', if it's adulterated in any way.

lol. sugar-producing genes? dude, sugar is not made from DNA. lol. it's impossible to have such a thing. the only nutrients that are made from DNA are amino acids i.e. protein.

still dont mean you cant cross breed an orange with sugar cane to produce a super sweet orange...

apple juice and/or pear juice and even grape juice are base for many juices to control acidity and sweetness

mix tropicana apple and tropicana orange juices together, its mad yummy
