meh

GM is going to be eliminating half its workforce by 2014 (assuming its still around by then).

Good for the government not handing out free money like the US did to the banking industry.

Its sad, but it had to be done.

It's the same as euthanizing a badly injured dog, it just had to be done.

That's kind of what happens to manufacturing jobs.

That's why parents tell us to go to school

just to add on that......
also it is just not those 2600, think about all the other vendors, part suppliers, distributors etc it is much bigger impact to the community then just 2600 people.

yup...think of all the investment the Provincial government has made into that industry over the past 10 years...

what if that $$$ was spent on developing the hightech industry in Waterloo?? How many more jobs would be sustainable? How many more families could that feed?

We gotta stop investing in manual labor and start investing in innovation and technology creation.

lol u wana stop spending money on cars. i htink there might be a car for every person in canada , we do need them if we dont make then then we will be loosing more money . and how dose spending money in waterloo help the ppl in oshawa u think there gona move 2600 familys to a diffrent city + all the supporting familys could be as high as 5:1 so 2600x5= 13000 familys who will be looking for work . waterloo couldnt hold that many ppl . 13000familys x 3.5 ppl per family = 45500 ppl . of corse this might sund like worse case but i dont htink its too far off . how many restruants will be closing and small shops .

I didn't say anything about spending money on cars.

I just think that the Provincial government should stop "INVESTING" in manufacturing jobs and other manual labor type jobs and instead, invest in "SUSTAINABLE" industries that makes Canada more competitive from an entrepreneurial and tertiary industry perspective.

This is not about moving 2,600 factory workers to Waterloo. Its about supporting the hightech industry in Waterloo, an industry that is owned by Canadians so the profits stay here.

Best example: Research In Motion. We need more RIMs in Canada. Not more GM/Toyota plants.

oh yeah...if the government gave all those tax credits and grants to High Tech companies like RIM, those jobs would probably still be around.
