Vodka Truck overturned today

On Wednesday the problem for Toronto commuters was beer – as in spilled beer all over the highway after a big rig tipped on the 401, causing traffic chaos.

A day later, Hamilton drivers had their Thursday morning rush hour stalled by vodka – more accurately a pile of vodka bottles smashed on the pavement on Highway 403 when another tractor-trailer overturned.

No one was seriously injured in this latest spill, but the highway near the Q.E.W. remained closed as crews cleaned up the broken glass from the empty bottles. It appears the truck was the only vehicle involved.

Careless driving charges were laid against a 19-year-old Mississauga woman in Wednesday’s spill after her Honda Civic apparently collided with the Molson truck in the midst of a lane change.

The truck flipped and crashed into the cement guardrail, spilling more than 2,000 cases of beer onto the highway, leaving it a foamy mess. Traffic was backed up for kilometres during the six-hour clean-up.

Though her Civic was demolished, the woman miraculously sustained minor injuries. The trucker was fine too, but the two accidents in two days have other truck drivers worried their reputations are being tarnished.

It’s the number one occupation for young men in the country, with more than 250,000 truckers on the road. Driver Leo Vandraanem suggested that motorists often underestimate the amount of space big rigs need on the highway.

“Keep your distance from them, and you prevent an accident from happening,” Vandraanem suggested.
