Personal Video Recorder/PVR ?????

Personal Video Recorder/PVR ?????
I'm looking at these PVR units, but I really no little about them. Basically a recording device similar to a VCR, but with no tape correct? I've noticed that some have a built-in DVD and hard drive too.

The wife watches alot of TV programs, but I'm sick of always using tapes. I thought one of these would be much better.
I know a few of you guys work/worked at FS, so what can you recommend?

i heard that the pvr that comes with sympatico is actually pretty good and comes in handy. i guess it's one of those things that when you have it it's awesome, but if you don't you can live without it
