public vs private schools

What are your thoughts?

I am totally against any government support of school privatization.

If you want your children to learn more more of a culture of your own, you always have Saturday/Sunday school.

Private schools all have their own agendas, and a lot of times it's religion.

The main purpose of elementary school, besides a very basic education is to teach kids proper socialization and culture.

I went to a small private school from grade 2-6, it was the public school curriculum with an extra hour of an ethnic education. We learned wonderful about our "country" (which was actually a soviet state back then) and "history" (like the alphabet was given to our people by god to some guy in a dream, overnight - then 2 more letters were added)

I think kids should at school at least receive unbiased information, or at least to the ideals of the country the parents want their kids in. Whether it be science, history, world politics, whatever.

For kids who have special needs like to pray during the day, recess can be built around that with the kids able to go to a prayer room at that point.

For parents who feel the public school cannot accommodate their needs, they are always free to move to a country that can.

You brought your kids here for a better life, or you yourself came here for one, there is a reason for that. We don't do things the way they do over there, and you should stop expecting it.

I'm surprised the conservative party supports school privatization, I'm assuming they found a way they can funnel more money to rich white guys by doing so!

---------

I am in no way support McGuinty by the way, his ad is just to make you forget that he did absolutely nothing to the education system.

the thing that I find funny about his ad is that he's totally contridicting himself, his kids go to private schools!...

If and when we have a child and if we have enough money, we would send our kids to a private school.

I went to public school for a good chunk of my school years and then in highschool I went to a Catholic School. I would have rathered to go to a private school when I was little, then have the choice for highschool's.

I think if the child really hates going to a private school, they should have the ultimate choice not the parents.

I went to a private religious school...

I think it's good to have them funded, because they need to be regulated better, the gov't needs more say and control over what the kids are learning... the only way that can happen is if they throw some money their way.

Honestly it's 53,000 kids in all of Ont. that are in private schooling, it's not going to make that big a difference, and this way they'll all have the same standard of education across the board.

and remember it's not public vs. private..

it's public & catholic vs. private religious...

fully private schools like appleby, maclachlan, crescent, U of T College school, etc... and other crazy schools that you guys haven't even heard of cuz they're stupidly expensive won't get money from the gov't.

and with two options for public schooling, one religious and one not, if you decide to send your kids to private school then screw you...it was your choice so you pay the bill.

no they don't... why do they have individual school boards then? why do they make their decisions completely independent of each other?

it's public vs. seperate altho they are BOTH publicly funded

I agree with that to a point, but it's also not fair to say well we'll pay for catholics to learn how they want to, but no other religion qualifies...

there's definitely pros and cons to both... but 7 other provinces have this 'formula' and it seems to work for them.

Also this won't make religious private school free - my understanding is that it lets you make the tuition tax deductible up to a certain amt? but i could be wrong about that

also it would force them to teach the same standard, hire only qualified teachers, and have the same testing/inspections as other schools have...

right now there are NO standards

Hehe, I like this topic! I believe that public schools are better because like someone said earlier the purpose of elementary school is for socialization.. Say if a child goes to a private school, they only socialize with "upper class" kids, and in real life, you deal with people off all social classes. I believe that public schools are better because you get to deal with all types of economic classes.

From my point of view as a teacher private schools suck. If you teach at a private school sometimes you don't get an opportunity to pay into your pension plan and your not backed up by the teaching federation.

All in all, I believe that it is important for the child to decide, because they he/she does not enjoy their school environment they will not perform well. They will perform well when they are more confortable and in an environment that they enjoy
