question for motorcycle owners...RE: new rider hopefully

hey all

i'm just looking into getting my motorcycle license and buying a bike. I feel i'm mature enough to enjoy the bike and not kill myself on it (if i had a bike at 18, that would be scary with speeds i used to do).

i'd be looking into a 600cc bike like Honda CBR600 or simular. i'd also be taking a motorcycle safety course for insurance and experience purposes. anything else i should know before embarking on this? also my main thing, what will insurance be like on a 2001 CBR600. my insurance on my 1999 EL is $212 a month full coverage. bike would likely only be PL & PD as thefts don't seem to be as popular as they are with civics/EL's.

i'm basically just looking for some advice, experiences of riders who ride sportbikes like CBR, R6 (one day, oh yes, one day) GXR750, etc and what your insurance is like. i'm 23 years old so that will be against me forsure.

my plan is if i follow through on this, i'll get a cheap *** car for rainy weather/super long trips and winter...and ride the bike whenever possible.

later
adam

Don't get a 600 for a starter bike. 90+ HP at the rear wheel + 500 lbs + new rider = trouble. Get a 500cc, plus 600 on insurance, a supersport that is, is expensive! Call around, switch your car to State farm and youll be paying less than 1500/year for a 600cc! Good luck!

i know 500cc will still have more then enough get up and go for me to start.

Get an older and lower power bike, and just get the aftermarket race bodywork to update the style. That's what I've been thinking of doing.

The bike will have to wait though. I just got my new speed toy and all $ will be going to that.

Trust me, i LOVE the look of the supersports, except they have way to much power and arent forgiving. With state farm, you're set. Insurance is dirt cheap so if you do get a 600, youll be paying nothing. The new GS500F has a full fairing that has the look of a gixxer, buts its brand new and pricey. Or buy a bike for under 3 grand, ride it till mid summer and sell it and buy the bike you want.

been researching more, seems GS500 is recommended all over the net as a perfect starter bike. 99-02 are cheap enough on autotrader.

i'm just researching more now on things like MPG, speed, handling, weight, etc. its no CBR 600RR but then again, if it helps me learn better i can always have the toys later

spend the money and get some good leathers and a good helmet. I was in a motorcycle accident on a 96 Kawasaki ZX6R. Bad news... I have pics of all my injuries. Seriously its expensive but the best investment you will ever make.

I second that notion SOP, $100 helmet for a $100 head. You get what you pay for regarding motorcycle gear, be sure to look for quality stiching.

Make sure you have proper boots as well, I probably wouldn't be walking normal today if I wasn't wearing mine.

GS500F's are excellent starter bikes, dead reliable as well. If you can find a mid 90's low mileage example it will be like having a new motorcycle as they haven't changed them up until the past year with the additional full fairing.

Just don't be a squid and wear shorts and t-shirt while doing 200km/h on city streets, as you go by me I can feel the $$$ being removed from my pockets, haha

cbr 600 f4i or f3 is a good started bike...less hp more forgiving fuel injected etc....just have common sense...and get a ****ty dirt bike to learn how to control at the limits ie wheelie braking etc....best investment will be a dirt bike to hone skills for the street. Just don't go out a pull massive power wheelie's your first day out..

Keep in mind that if you drop a fairly new motorcycle with a full fairing, the plastic parts are ridiculously expensive to replace.

If all the plastics need to be replaced on the motorcycle (non structural), don't be surprised if the insurance company writes it off. Just some info to wrap your head around.

dont be a *** and but a cbr600rr for your firts bike, we just laugh at those guys butchering turns, get a honda 599 or a triumph speed 4, they are called naked bikes cause they are exactly like sprot bikes, but cheaper on insurance and WAY better for new riders, and even though you are 23 and your car insurance may have gond down, expect to be raped for motorcycle insurance, and if you are taking the saftey course dont expect to get anything more than a insuracne break you get next to no real life riding experience, half of the danger of riding a bike is idiots who do not look when they turn, and there are allot of them, but get a bike and you will love it and never regret it, you will laugh at guys reving their cars when it takes you less than 3 secconds to get to a speed when you can loose your license. Have fun.
