Question on shipping from us to canada - US taxes and customs?
Hey guys I need your opinoin on this
I just purcahsed an enguagement ring from the states ( bluenile.com ) and had it shipped to buffalo fed ex location. I went there myself and picked it up since I saved about 500+ in taxes and shipping charges. I took the ring out of the box and crossed the boarder with it no problems.
BUT
what I did do incase I got searched was shipped the EMPTY ring box with all reciepts/GIA grading report and aprasal ...basically just a box with some paper work without ANY RING OR PRODUCT in the package.
now, since I just shipped from the us, from the sender and reciever adress on the packing list I just have my name/adress for both. If they decide to open it to inspect...can they charge duty/taxes on a ring based just off paper work? they wont have anything to go on, no phisically ring...nothing...just a box and paper work. Sure they will put two and two together probably and assume I took the ring over myself, but whats done is done and they no longer can prove that I took it. Am I in the clear? or can I still get a bill of 500+ in taxes ? to me I would think there is no chance..but im paranoid for nothing.

OMG !!!
dont make me think of even more ways my plan can be foiled
but seriously...I should be in the clear right? its just paper work and a ring box..WHICH I DECLARED on the outside of a value of 10 bucks
and IF there is any charges, I will be informed of that when I get the package here right? no after I accept and 6-8 weeks later they bend me over...

there is no law that states you cant ship a carton or box that is empty. lol..fuking jokes.....you dont have to give any explanation to anyone why the ring is not in the box...haha. tell anyone who asks it looks better on my fiance's finger than in the box.
congratulations on the engagement btw.

but can they "within reason" charge me for the ring?
I mean they see its not comming from a us adress to a canadian adress, its comming from me....to me...on the waybill. and if they look at the sales reciepts inside the box they will see the date of purcahse, basically everything they need to get an exact purchase price in order to charge customs......BUT there is no product what so ever so how can they even charge customs without lagit phisical evidence? I am 99.9% sure it will go without a problem but like I said I am just scared.
btw thanks !!!
I crossed the boarder with it around me neck on a chain (Y)

why is it stupid? its probably worth 20 bucks, and when I propose it iwll be the perfect presentation. Much better than taking it out of my pocket, covered in lint and fingerprints and having the dimond look like **** because its not clean.
and If you read my post...I did take it over the boarder with me...that was not my concern.
but in any rate, after a day of thinking about it, Im in the clear, there is NO way they can legally charge me duty on a 5000 doller ring when there is no ring to be seen besides a box and paper work.

you demonstrate a clear lack of thinking...
you shouldnt have shipped the box and created a problem for yourself.
prior to that, you shoudlnt have been fooled that this girl is different from all the rest, which led you to creat this problem for yourself.
pussywhip.. it does strange things to men...

what if my girlfriend lived in buffalo, and I proposed to her in the states tehrefore I didnt have anything to declare.....
and I shipped the stuff back to my home adress for personal records....because if I would have been searched at the boarder they would have asked were the ring was. Really I dont think anything will happen
