I know some soapbox races you can attend 
What I'm saying is...what kind of racing are you interested in? Solo I, Solo II, Improved Touring, Showroom Stock, drag racing, circuit racing, road racing, bench racing, etc.
Go to scca.org and check out what you are interested in first, then proceed to follow their instructions. There are also clubs in your area I'm sure, that have sanctioned racing and organized meets. Hook up with a club, and keep it off the streets.
