RE:cell phones and sim cards TELUS > ROGERS/fido
So my phone finnaly died and i am no longer in a contract with telus, but those damn gsm phones are way cheaper then the cdmi which telus/bell carry.
Now that they are slowly making the move to gsm just woundering if anyone with a mikephone or blackberry curve with the telus sim card has ever tried to put it in a unlocked gsm phone?
Client care is willing to give me a good package, its just the avalibility of phones sucks compared to gsm.
p.s. if you didnt know telus does have a sim card on the blackberry curve or mike phone
thanks

I thought you needed different equipment for GSM and CDMA and I don't think Telus has rolled out that much new technology to their towers.
Are they piggybacking on Rogers?
Can you get a (non-BB) data plan on their sim cards?

i was talking with some telus people as well as looking into alot of online sites about telus and GSM. Apparently the other countires which also use the cdmi network are phasing it out and going gsm due to lost revenue in international travelers whom visit other countries. Since gsm is more mainstream and probibly due to the 2010 Olympics i would guess there going to head that way.
Getting back to the sim card, apparently it runs on the 2 upper frequencys and not on the lowest of the three. i might just bight the bullet and give it a try, or if someone here has a mike phone and wants to try on a friends unlocked gsm would save a lot of headaches. You'll also become hero's to all those on the telus/bell networks

firstly it's CDMA. Secondly the frequncy that mike's iden network runs on is not a network supported by any conventional gsm service provider. Thirdly I don't know where you are getting your info from but it's wrong about bell/telus getting rid of their CDMA service. Both companies offer international phones that can run on gsm and CDMA networks and such phones are geared to the internatinal business traveller. Even if bell and telus were to phase out CDMA it wouldn't be for years and it would have to over ted rogers dead body. The cost for current subscribers to switch their handsets to accomomodate a new network would be rediculous.
So in the end telus sim card will not allow you to use an unlocked gsm phone and make phone calls or use any network features.

agree with Cynikal ... bell and telus have no need to get rid of their cdma ... they have phones such as the Blackberry WORLD Edition .. which carries both cdma and gsm (only for international use) so why carry the burden of switching when they can jus expand ... but goodluck in your search for using a cdma card in a gsm phone ...

if or when this change comes to be it will make the market very interesting. I wouldn't hold my breath over it though. The cost and time to build a whole new gsm system will take years and forcing general users to purchase new phones etc will also take time. Not to mention telus's koodoo mobile that they just rolled out and the almost exclusive use of CDMA in remote locations. Only time will really tell. If anything I perhaps see the business side initially make the move and leave the general user on the CDMA network and then perhaps ween them over years like when rogers switched from tdma.
