Recommend me a decent digital camera.

Recommend me a decent digital camera.
I’m looking at upgrading from my current Kodak EasyShare CX4200 to something a little higher end. It’s serves it purpose for taking basic photos and posting pics on the web, but the quality to take actual decent sized photos sucks. It has no useful features, 2x digital zoom, only 16mb memory and 2.0 megapixels.
I like the Sony Cyber-shot DSCW1 5.1MP Digital Camera. It has a huge 2.5" monitor for my blind eyes, but I've read a few bad reviews about it. Any thoughts?

Canon seems pretty high on everyones list, but what makes their cameras so much better? I’d be willing to spend around $500 and remember I’m kind of camera illiterate, so kindly explain to me your choices and why.
Thx.Mike

Sony - remember sony uses thier proprietery memory stick, which can be a good and bad thing, BAD: its slightly more expensive (actually for a 1 gig card its $100 more than a comparibly compact flash at future shop) and doens't work with other NON-Sony devices GOOD: if you have other sony devices it works, such as a Sony Clie, you could view your pictures in the handheld (IMO not a very usefull feature, but one none the less...
my dad has a canon A40, he loves it, all kind of features, but easy to use, and quality of pictures is good.

canon uses their own lenses...and have been the best quality overall from all the various brands I have used (fuji, olympus, sony, kodak, nikon) and all canon owners will agree with the top notch quality that they produce...and they are in an awesome price range too

that 5 megapixle sony has bad underexposer isues ... i must admit it is a damn cool camera but the photo quality it produces is not worth the money
i suggest you look at buying a camera online
these are the best steps
find the cameras that you have the greatest interest in
read reviews about them
then take the top 2 or 3 and look for the best price from epinions.com
then look for the lowest trusted store
and buy
i did this back in may and it saved me a tonne of money
good luck

Re: Recommend me a decent digital camera.
i too have read that the new sony cameras have bad reviews.
don't let their ingenious new designs fool you. one thing, their flash is too close to the lens.
with ur specifics, i'd go for a canon s500, though an older model, it's the most powerful ultra compact, and it's at its cheapest price right now. other models to consider are the canon s410 or sd300.
(the sd models, sd200 and sd300 are redesigned s models w/ a 2.0" lcd rather than the 1.5" that the present s400, s410, and previous s310 had)
canon and nikon are the leaders of digital imaging. but when it comes to compact and ultra compact digital cameras, canon leads by far.

i recommend canon also. have a A70 myself and love it. the newer models are even better. the A series has more manual features and the S series are more compact with a few less manual features. go with one with a rechargeable lithium ion. makes life easier.
the only prob with mine is it runs on 4 AA which makes the camera heavier and bulky. not to mention having to use a seperate charger for the batteries.

Thanks for all the tips guys. I really like the Canon SD300 so far. http://www.canon.ca/english/index-pr...23&gid=2&ovr=1 If I had to buy a Canon, I guess it would fit my budget and needs the best. I don't understand alot of the technical specs, but it does have what I'm looking for. Any other Canons I should consider?

Mike, check out the Kodak camera's. My friend has the upgrade to mine and it's pretty amazing. You can check out mine whenever you want.
