Router/home network question

I have 2 computers running off a router sharing an internet connection, is it possible to have the files on both computers visible to each other, like can i take files form one computer and put it on the other through the shared connection. Can I see the files that the other computer has?

thanks

Joker

ya, it's easy..just make sure they're on the same network (same network name..if any) and share your drives..the only problems you might encounter depend on your O/S and the security features set up (firewalls etc..)
i was always able to do it thru SE, ME or XP, but 2k is proving to be a real biatch cuz i don't know it like i did the others..the security blocks aren't playing fair

the hard one to do is sharing beyond the router, like if you have 6 computers or sumtin' and the router will only support 4..
that's when ya have to start messing with the DMZ, but then yer system is wide open..kinda defeats the purpose..
tho a hub behind the router can solve that too

Yeah, best thing you can do is file sharing. Or you can run remote access, I know if you load windows explorer you can view files off both drives. Getting shared drives will be tricky at first, but use the windows automated thing. (DMZ may not be needed to mess around with, but DMZ will make one computer purely visibile on the Internet, so make sure that computer is protected with a firewall atleast!)

All you have to do it put both computers in the same workgroup and share drives/folders. You probably also need to enable File and Printer Sharing if you have not already.

To put them on the same workgroup, assuming you're using XP, right click "My Computer" and click Properties. A window opens, click the "Computer Name". Set the workgroup to something, I use MSHOME as default. Do this on all systems.

Then, go in windows explorer, and right click a drive or folder. Click Properties, then the Sharing TAB and lick Share over the network.

That should be enough. That's how I share mine over my network using my LinkSys router. There shouldn't be a need to configure your router.

If you don';t like doing it that way, there's always the wizard somehwere in network properties.

It's probably a good idea to run a firewall such a ZoneAlarm if you're paranoid of people "hacking" you.

the only router shyt you'd have to do is if you're looking beyond the router..like i said above (maybe it came across wrong??)

jaysi, zonealarm has proven to block networking for me in the past..the only way i've been able to access other rigs is by shutting it down...not saying you're wrong, just noting that it might lead to problems....

ill give it a try and let u guys know how it goes
thanks

i have another question, my ethernet port on my computer is not pci, its built in, sometimes my browser will stop working but msn will be perfectly fine, IE6 just wont open any webpages, this happens both when connected to a router and without a router. Is there anyway to fix this, when I restart the computer it will work fine but will stop again (sometimes after 5 minutes other times after 30 minutes but it wont go for more that an hour and a half without a reboot of the computer.)

Anyone know whats wrong/??

THanks

Joker

Good Point.I knew someone would have said that. Yah you're most likely right, I don't bother with firewalls personally, just for that reason. They are too secure and tend to block everyhting.

It'll work but you'll probaly have to set it up, which would lead to extra problems etc. Good point .
