save on duty Canada-US boarder

http://www.thestar.com/News/Canada/article/262161

Here's a list of some of the items that can be brought across the Canada-U.S. border without paying duty. (Canadian taxes always apply.)

what is this line suppose to mean? i thought when you come back from US to Canada that you pay duties and that is equivalent to the Canadian Tax of 14%. So anyone know the deal with "without paying duty" and " (Canadian taxes always apply.)"??

The statement doesnt make sense. there can be no GST on products brought over the border since the product was not sold in Canada. In leui of the GST, a duty amount is charged based on a certain percentage...which as you pointed out is close or equal to the current sales tax.

it's casual.. smuggling goods across the border isn't really frowned on, we all joke about it. just make sure you don't speed across the border.

duty is different from tax. tax is tax, duties are duties hahaha

look, because of the north american free trade agreement, anything made in the US and Mexico can move freely across borders without duties. this does NOT exempt it from taxes. all they're saying, the goods in that list are also free of duties. BTW, most of you have never paid duty on anything, unless it was tobacco alcohol or firearms (j/k about the last one) I think firearms made in the US are duty-free
