What do you need to legally drive a scooter on the street?

Insurance? M License? Helmet?

I want to buy an old Honda or Yamaha 50 and fix it up to rip around the neighbourhood on.

Anybody know the rules?

I think under 50cc is no 'M' license, no Highway, but you need insurance and a helmet.

That's why all the 50cc scooters and pocketbikes are really 49cc...

I'm too lazy to search through the HTA and i figure that someone here would know from experience.

just like a motorcycle pretty much...

the only thing exempted is a moped... though it will change later this year to be the same as a motorcycle (so stupid)...

the 49cc rule only applies to mopeds, not scooters...

So it would make more sense to just get an old bike to beat around on.

I have a 1980 honda moped PA50. I drive around on it all the time. You dont need a special license for it. Insurance is optional, but you do need license plate and ownership obv...

thats a moped.

mopeds (bikes that can be powered by pedels or a motor) you just need your G2 - G.

scooters (anything with a motor and no pedels) you need your M.

You know what people say about fat chicks and scooter don't you?

Back in Highschool my parents had a Honda Elite 80cc 4stroke. The top speed on that was 70km/hr. I got up to 80 once. ie. wind with my back, going down hill, etc

Honestly for the GTA 50cc is kinda of gutless. If you want to get a scooter check into an old honda elite anything above 100cc.

I have an old Kona hardtail mountain bike... spliced an engine into the rear hub turning it into a moped... its slow (top speed is 35ks)... but fun as hell...

I've actually ridden it into TO from Sauga several times... passing by many cops, who don't seem to care (didn't have my helmet on either)...

I only got stopped by a cop once, but he just asked about where I got the engine...

I wouldn't do this on a normal moped, because well they look like mopeds... from afar, I look like I'm just riding a touring bike with panniers...

I sometimes kill the engine and start pedalling if I feel cops are watching... but so far so good...

I'll be taking it to work this summer on leisurely days... can't wait...
