Actually this is benefitical for the atlantic community to help supplement their income because they can't really fish in the winter. And actually brings about 16 million dollars in for them, and with the over 6 million seal population I dont think its a big deal....you eat meat right?

why do people care so much about seals??? who gives a shiiiit.

there are countries in the world where thousands of PEOPLE are killed every year....if all the bleeding hearts and celebrities want to make a real difference, go do something about that instead.

attempting to stop some newfies from killing a seal doesnt matter in the whole scheme of things.

I think its more in the nature of how they are killed..

their are literally beaten to death, (clubbed in head etc..).

they have to control the seal population to control the fish population.. they do have rules and guidelines to follow about it.. ie. no killing baby seals, do it humanely..

Actually they have to be shot in the head, or hit in the head with an icepick. Basically put theyre "shouldnt" be any pain.

As for Sin-City's comment....your a follower think up your own

hmmm, it's slow for me right now, this is the off time for heating and air companies so I guess i'll go kill things and sell them so I can make a few bucks.

after reading that page, I realize that there is so much mis-information being posted in this thred. Obviously the US Humane Society site will be biased but still you can’t argue with facts that have tangible evidence.

no killing baby seals? The point of the seal hunt is to kill baby seals, because the fur is in pristin condition. "Last year, 98.5% of the seals killed were two months of age or younger"

“revenues from the hunt account for less than 1% of the province's economy and only 2% of the landed value of the fishery” Clearly it is not an economically essential activity.

“Video evidence clearly shows sealers routinely dragging conscious pups across the ice with boathooks, shooting seals and leaving them to suffer in agony, and even skinning seals alive. In 2001, an independent team of veterinary experts studied Canada's commercial seal hunt. Their report concluded that in 42% of the cases they examined, the seal did not show enough evidence of cranial injury to guarantee unconsciousness at the time of skinning.”

dont get me wrong I am not some type of communist, hippy, left-wing, naturalist, activist, I just oppose the hunt because it is inhumane. It’s my INFORMED opinion. people have posted so much wrong informaton in this thread I suggest not posting until you actually have information that is accurate.
to be clear, I am not arguing with anyone's opinion your opinion is whatever it is and that's cool. I am just saying not so substantiate your opinion with inaccuracte info.

no killing baby seals...the law is you cannot kill any white coats and on babyseals their white coats can turn dark within 14 days...which still makes them babies and totally legal to hunt

i feel bad for the seal hunters that do follow the rules and guidlines...... i guess a few bad apples will put all of them into one group of inhumane seal hunters.

If thats the source of their income, they gotta do what they gotta do, it is easy for people in ontario to say, well find another job... everyone knows how hard that can be in ontario, can you imagine how tough it could be for people in the east coast? Not to say that there isn't job opportunites elsewhere in the east coast, but to me it seems like its a way of life, and that a lot of people depend on such things to pay the bills...

this is my opinion based on things i've seen on the news etc.
