Sent to your po box in Canada or the US? If its in Canada then, gifts are only duty free up to $60 in value. So if you insure it for $300, customs may conclude its worth $300 (or more) and you will be charged accordingly. You will also be charged gst and pst and a $5 handling fee by CanadaPost.

if it's a gift or a warrenty replacement they most likely will let it pass no taxes

customs opens everything now, my mom just had a package shipped, marked that it was worth 300 dollars. well they opened it and appraised it at 5000 dollars, so they are now telling my mom that she must pay just over 1500 dollars in taxes i guess, or she won't get her package.

i thought you paid taxes on how much you paid, not how much it's worth.

hey astro, care to explain this?

That depends. Say you buy something off ebay for $100. Its shipped and the sender declares on the package a value of $100. Great. Well if customs opens it and being the dumb ***** that they are, they might assess (sp?) the value to be say $1000. Well its there word against the sender, who are they going to choose?

Now if the sender included a print out of the ebay sale or paypal receipt or any business receipt, then your assessment should be on the value on the receipt. But with no paperwork confirming value, they may determine there own amount and use it.

All customs assessments can be appealed though. So you should tell your mom to get all the paperwork (receipts, visa statments, etc...) she can relating to the sale and appeal the valuation.

So ya, you do pay taxes on the amount you paid, if you can prove you paid that amount.

ps, get your *** to a wednesday night meet

i got an Intercooler shipped via usps shipped from the states.

I asked the company (they were small), and they shipped it from a personal address from me, not from the business and marked it as a gift.

Value was declared at 290 USD, and i paid 15 dollars total.

and that was just to the delivery guy, as a handling charge, think i got lucky. Never got dutied =)

BUt don't get anything shipped UPS, 180usd i paid 70 cdn duty.

Pretty much your taking a risk of getting taxed and paying duties when you ship form the states. Either take the chance and if they **** you over just tell them to send it back to the sender. I am having an amp, wiring and a deck all shipped from the states and im praying they dont check the packages. I am having the stuff shipped via UPS as a gift with a value of $100. Hopefully they dont **** me over.
