The early 90s were such a busy time in hip hop that it's hard to categorize any of it... we had groups like Digital Underground doing their thing; A Lighter Shade of Brown, Tha Mexakinz, Funkdoobiest, Cypress Hill all touting their Latino roots; House of Pain bringing white kids into the fray; Leaders of the New School ushering in the 'new school' sound; Fu-Schnikens mixing in elements of island music; Dr. Dre, MC Ren and other west coast rappers keeping the 'gangsta rap' sound alive; and so many other incredible variations on rap that it definitely was one of the most amazing periods in the history of hip hop culture. Even these would qualify as 'old school' today.
To me, I'd say 'old school' qualifies as anything up until rap became commercially viable and started getting played on almost every radio station on the dial — when acts like Puff Daddy and the likes started dominating the airwaves. I'd say that's the cutoff for 'old school' hip hop. I am happy to see a return (at least in underground movements) to the old school ways with well-known acts like Jurassic 5, The Roots and Common, and lesser known artists like Madlib, paying homage to their roots.
So, not to sound like an *** or anything, but I think those lists need revising before they qualify as 'old school'. That's my opinion at least. They're good lists (all great songs), I just wouldn't call them all 'old school' tracks.
