Since when did artists like Busta Rhymes, Eminem, Mase, Big Pun and DMX become 'old school'? Old school to me would be going back to my 1984 cassette of Grand Master Melle Mel and the Furious Five (anyone remember 'White Lines'?).
Now that quote is saying 'old school' era of hip hop ended about 1986. I'd go even further to classify 'old school' as anything prior to the debut of the whole 'Africanism' hip hop movement in the early 90's that ushered in what some may call 'middle school' acts like A Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, Stetsasonic, Main Source, Digable Planets, and so on... but then I would even accept those as 'old school'.
You could also add in later 'new school' acts like the entire Hieroglyphics crew (Del, Casual, Souls of Mischief) and The Pharcyde from the west coast, and the revival of east coast hip hop from acts like Black Moon, Smif-n-Wessun, Lords of the Underground, Das Efx, early Nas, Jeru the Damaja and even Gangstarr (though they've been around for a long long time). The early 90s were such a busy time in hip hop that it's hard to categorize any of it... we had groups like Digital Underground doing their thing; A Lighter Shade of Brown, Tha Mexakinz, Funkdoobiest, Cypress Hill all touting their Latino roots; House of Pain bringing white kids into the fray; Leaders of the New School ushering in the 'new school' sound; Fu-Schnikens mixing in elements of island music; Dr. Dre, MC Ren and other west coast rappers keeping the 'gangsta rap' sound alive; and so many other incredible variations on rap that it definitely was one of the most amazing periods in the history of hip hop culture. Even these would qualify as 'old school' today.
To me, I'd say 'old school' qualifies as anything up until rap became commercially viable and started getting played on almost every radio station on the dial — when acts like Puff Daddy and the likes started dominating the airwaves. I'd say that's the cutoff for 'old school' hip hop. I am happy to see a return (at least in underground movements) to the old school ways with well-known acts like Jurassic 5, The Roots and Common, and lesser known artists like Madlib, paying homage to their roots.
So, not to sound like an *** or anything, but I think those lists need revising before they qualify as 'old school'. That's my opinion at least. They're good lists (all great songs), I just wouldn't call them all 'old school' tracks.

It all depends how old the person is, and what they consider "old School" I guess.

I have fun playing Dj Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince - Parents just Don't Understand.
And this is without even looking in the record crate......I play this stuff every Saturday - Also get to play in the classis house
I am NOT looking forward to ever having to move - I have 3000+records that I am NEVER parting with..
The problem with being a Dj is it's a Self Fueling Addiction...The more you work - the more records you buy - the more records you have - the more work you get - the more work you get - the more records you buy - It NEVER stops
