Jay, Ive always liked altec lansing for small, affordable yet good sounding. There 5.1 or 6.1 are usually around the $100 or a little more, and they do sound good, although most comp setups come with small subs so you gotta watch out when your playing music etc as you might be missing on some of the lower end.

If your serious about your sound Id look into something like the Klipsch Promedia setup, from what Ive heard there truly amazing systems.

Now if this doesn't make you hard I dont know what will.

Klipsch Promedia 5.1

Dual Side firing 8" subs
500 watts RMS

Ohh man that is a wicked setup.

For something good and cheap I'd go for Altec Lansing!!

Just keep in mind that if you live and home then you won't need something which an abundance of power since your parents will just keep on telling you "TURN IT DOWN!!!!!" lol

Ive used a fair bit of 5.1 systems for speakers (FS extended warranty ), so ive tested out a few systems. Im personally running the 5.1 Altec Lansing system. The bass is pounding, the sound is crisp. I suggest getting those. However, if you want a good 4.1 system, but more power/more expensive, hands down get the Logitech z560s. Just my two cents.

This is what I have....the 251.

Gives a decent sound output...the mid and highs are crystal clear, but the sub is not really ground shaking. It has low end, but when you turn it up high, it loses it's backbone if you know what I mean. It's not bad though, but doesn't come close to the real home theater set up I have.

Cost me $70 at a pawnshop.

The store still has some other powered speaker combos for computers there (one 5.1 surround set up left......the rest are 2 and 4 speaker set ups.)

I also split the audio output to a home theater sub I have as well, so when I want that ground shaking bass when playing movies on my computer, I just turn on the extra sub.

To take advantage of a 5.1 speaker set up, you need to have a card that outputs 5.1 sound, installed in your computer. I have SB live ($40).

If you have a chance J, I'll bring you to the store to check out what they have left.
