FACULTY STRIKE UPDATE
March 23, 2006
After two and a half days of negotiating, talks between OPSEU and the Council have broken off again. OPSEU has proposed voluntary binding arbitration while the Council would like to go to Final Offer Selection. Ted Montgomery, Chair of OPSEU Academic Bargaining Team said during his press conference that they will review the Council's offer this evening and make a decision.
We are asking the McGuinty government in tomorrow's budget to increase college per student funding to the national average of approximately $9,600. College students in Ontario receive less funding from the provincial government compared to high school and university students. YOU are ranked 10th out of 10 provinces when it comes to per student funding.
Final Offer Selection - is a type of arbitration under the College's Collective Bargaining Act, where a neutral third party would look at both offers on the table and choose one or the other in its entirity.
Voluntary Binding Arbitration - is where an appointed arbitrator would also look at both offers on the table and choose the good and the bad from each offer to make a new agreement that both sides would have to live with. The arbitrators decision is final.
