Seriously, Go to the bar a few times and see what it's like sober.
That will give an idea of how you act when you're out drinking.
It just might be enough for you to figure out what else you like to do with your time.
I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with the bars or drinking, hell if it weren't for those years of bars, booze, and *****, I'd have a few nicer material things and not sooooooo many fuzzy memories and more than a few womens faces that I just can't put a name to. I just decided to do something different with my life and ended up with a whole new circle of friends. Every one is different, so asking us for ideas on what to do, might defeat the purpose.
Hell, from time to time I still test what left of my liver and let him know that " I'M IN CHARGE B!TCH". My 34th B'day saw 28 Gin N' Tonic, 4 Corona, and 8 shots Of Tequila disappear(I think) in thin air before I found my way home to pass out on the couch with my coat still on.

Ok, I at least have a suggestion.

I know its not for everyone, but in a situation that demands such a serious measure at least consider it.

I needed to do something very similar in my life a while back. I got really into watching UFC and thought it was pretty cool, and looked into it. Now what I found was something that really didn't point to UFC at all, martial arts.

This is something that you can very easily get into for Friday nights, most dojo's in the city offer classes throughout the week and most also offer friday night classes. Going with a friend can really act as a motivator for both of you to start progressing through the ranks, have fun, learn how to defend yourself, and the most important in this situation - self control, and discipline.

Who knows, you may both really get into it, and it is pretty damn far from being a "brokeback" alternative. Do your research and find the art for you, there are MANY, ranging from very traditional to new age.

Then try to stay super involved in autocrossing; solo1 or solo2, that way neither of you will want to be hung over because you will be so concerned with beating each other the next day in track times. You will also be able to put all of the money you would normally "****" away in booze towards upgrading your car to make it faster and faster for the track........ all while staying healthy, focused, and strong.

Who knows, might be a life changing experience. It is a phenomenal way to relieve stress and build yourself mentally and physically. Im not religious, but this is as close as I have been to finding myself..... sentimental I know, but take it for what it is.

Best of luck to you and your friend. Keep your head up, life is short.
