Thinking of a rally car

ok as some of you know I'm thinking of doing the targa in a few years and I want to start thinking about getting a car to build for rally use.

I'm not looking for people to post saying what they have forsale because I'm not looking to buy ...yet... and even when I am looking to buy I'll post in the wtb forum...

so note this is not a want to buy thread.

anyways what I'd like is something with 4WD I don't want to race in a 2 wheel drive class ... so 4 wheel drive it is...

anyways I also want to do this cheaply .... so it would have to be older... (as in late 80's early 90's model) and it has to be light ... I don't want to drive a tank... a civic is a handful and more wieght just means me getting more frustrated with the car

I was thinking of a Mazda 323 GTX being that it's turbo and has 4wd that can be locked at 50/50 so I think it would be interesting to think about ... just can't find any of those....

anyone got any other makes/models that I should check out? thanks

those are really popular...

another idea could be those old subaru justy's... they are defiantely light, have 4wd... probably not the quickest car inthe world but gaining power is the easy part

Definately the best budget way to go

also check out the Subaru Justy and if you're daring look into the Audi 90 Quattro

for good reason...

you could pick up a 4th gen hatch then find the civic wagon 4wd tranny and drive train and go that route? or even using a crx engine and tranny in your car

the civic wagon AWD platform is only auto ... there is no AWD platform for the standard transmission....

plus I'd rather have a ready to go platform then a do this and that and this to it platform

too big I'd like something close to the size of my civic......

seriously I ain't considering the DSM ....

anyways looking around the Celica looks interesting there's one for sale in ontario. the 323 there is only one available in the states and it's high modified which I don't want ... and the Justy is only 3 cylinders that might get interesting none available in Canada but a ton in the states ... so it might be the best option so far .... but requires PITA factor of importing a car and such,..... and 3 cylinders is yucky.,...

anyways always looking for more suggestions.... something small...

does anyone know if there is a trader that allows a search of the rest of Canada and not just Ontario>?

subary legacy GT
mazda 323 GTX
talon AWD
subaru justy
BMW 325 xi
audi 4000 quatro
celica all-trac

I know you wanna stay away from domestics, but Talons are so plentiful you can find parts ANYWHERE!! whereas the other ones are a lot more rare and hard to find parts for! Think about that.

you have a good point Bruno..... I'll consider it .... right now I'm just going over the rules and considering stuff... also besides finding the car and parts for it I need to find someone thats been there and done that sort of thing which means searching the net for peopel that have built the choosen car for rally and seeing how they have done in competition
