OPP Officer Charged Under Street Racing Law
Wednesday May 14, 2008
CityNews.ca Staff
As the Ontario Provincial Police scan the province's highways from the sky and the ground looking for dangerous and aggressive drivers there's word one of their own is facing charges under the new street racing law.

A 43-year-old Peterborough County OPP constable was allegedly clocked driving at least 50 kilometres over the sped limit on Highway 115, just south of Peterborough, on March 25 according to a published report. The officer was in his cruiser at the time.

Under the street racing law, which went into effect last September, a driver caught speeding 50 km/hr or more above the posted limit can have their licence and vehicle seized immediately. The maximum fine for the crime was also bumped up to $10,000.

On Tuesday police organizations from across the province gathered in Markham to kick off Project Erase (Eliminating Racing Activities on Streets Everywhere). Authorities say 42 people have been killed by speeders in the GTA since 1999.

Since the street racing law went into effect, more than 4,500 charges have been laid.

The officer charged in March has been moved to desk duty at his detachment and is scheduled to appear in court in June.

4500 in roughly six months have been charged for something that kills about 5 idiots a year

does that seem reasonable? i wonder what percentage of speeding involving death included younger drivers drinking and driving...

401 should be 150 outside of city limits!

First off your stupid to speed on the 115 to begin with. I got nailed for doing 130km/hr in the 100km/hr zone last year. Plus the OPP have there own on ramp from the station near the Hwy 7 exit.

there shouldn't be a limit on the 400 series highways, just a minimum.

Just like the 40 and the 20 in Quebec. I swear, I'll be clipping at around 120 and they blow by me like I was standing still.

It's good that their cracking down on their own.
Yea I've seen that many times on trips down to Ottawa and Montreal. They'll be simply cruising but doing easily 30-40 over the limit blowing past everyone. Its just not fair damn it! :P

they charge people for that to deter others form doing it

when u were little and u saw other kids getting in trouble spitting on other kids u didnt do it because u saw the consequences and im sure it costs way more money to have court dates for all these 4500 people. judges and lawyers and clerkas have to be hired. im sure that costs more. and more points but too lazy to type im hungry

and when ur speeding, if u lose control of ur car, everyones life is in danger becuase that car is NOT in control, and u accept the responsibility of obeying the laws everytime u step in ur car so if ur gonna be ignorant about it and speed and put everyones life in danger, why not throw a $10 000 fine at u
