Throwing a comp together

Throwing a comp together
...for work. We will just be using it for basic stuff, surfing, programming some units (nothing intense like software programming) and viewing video playback off DVR's etc.
Were going to be running it on a 32" LCD TV as well as a 19" LCD monitor.
Any suggestions on CPU and Vid card?
Is Dual Core worth it, since were not using it for gaming? What about a Dual output VID card to run extended desktop with Windows, any suggestions there?

Dual Core is only needed if you need the horsepower (Video Editing, Lots of Gaming and the like). I'd suggest getting a decent proc and video card (look into ATI all in wonder for PVR capabilities) and run with it.

buy a Mac...
my next comp will be one, they just seem better made....better OS, can run windows, great hardware (runs windows very well)....and great "user experience"...
oh, and you definitely want dual core....(most new systems have dual core these days)...

Mac is crap.
No one has ever given me a specific advantage of using a Mac over a PC.
Windows XP is perfectly stable if you know how to use the operating system. I'm pretty sure if you are logged in as root user on mac and ****ing around you will have an unstable OS as well.
We have three Macs running OSX at work. The software is far more problematic than our PCs in the same department.
you can get a pretty decent system for around $1000 with WinXP that will last you a few years.
If all you want to do is surf the internet, you can get away with a system for $299. I would rather spend the G and have more functionality and not have to purchase a new one a year or two later.
Don't install Vista either way though!

completely agree with ya bruce fee
for typical usage like that theres no point in having a mac, most thing won't be compatable, normal ppl will have a hard time adjusting, etc..
mac isnt worth it for his needs
also, i'd get something with a core 2 duo aswell, computers are so damn cheap these days anyways might aswell do it big.
i recently ordered a laptop with a core 2 duo (2.16ghz) 2gb ram, 9cell batt, 3yr warranty, etc....
i coulda got away with getting something cheaper because this is a bit of overkill for my needs, but i want it to last for a bit and not get outdated quickly
(btw im also in the IT field)

i think Linux is a cute.

Matt, I would go with a video card with 256MB just because of your monitor size and the price difference. It should only be a $30-40 difference.
also, i noticed the card is AGP, If it were me, I would get a newer motherboard, most of them come with PCI-E now. Also, your HDD is IDE, SATA has been around for a while.
PM me if you want me to send you a list of my last workstation purchase with pricing for you to compare.
You're at $940 before tax, that is essentially what mine are with DVDR, 256MB PCI-E, antec psu, 2 seagate 300MB SATA drives with RAID and an intel cpu.
