Tropical vacation destinations

So they wife and I are planning a trip to the Caribbean in July. I/we have been to Cuba and Mexico, but we would like to try something different. Dominican Republic is an option because neither of us has been there, but we were thinking someting like Aruba, Turks and Caicos, something a little more exotic then the normal places.

Has anyone been anywhere besides the normal Cuba and Mexico?

does price matter?

it's easy to say you wanna go somewhere other than cuba or mexico until you realize that places like bahamas cost 5 times more

Been to Jamaica, it was awsome.

The next places I would love to go are Fiji and Costa Rica.

Heard they are amazing.

My parents just came back from Panama, and they LOVE it there. 2nd time they went (for 2 weeks).

If your into seeing **** you will never see again, go. Panama Canal, wild jungle rides (real ****, monkeys on trees, anacondas, etc.)

its awsome (from what they say, they always tell me to go)

COSTA RICA.

No complaints except we didn't have monkeys running around inside the hotel.

True. Within reason. It will probably be our only trip this year, so if it's a little more $$$, that's acceptable. 5 g's max maybe.

Jamaica I heard the resorts are beautiful, but the rest of the island sucks. I like to do a little sight seeing, so somewhere that is safe and clean would be a plus.

I also heard Costa Rica is very nice.

Antigua, beautiful island with white sand beaches. I will be going back.

http://www.antigua-barbuda.org/

There are lots of resorts on the island. Me and the wife stayed at Sandals Antigua. A bit pricy, but it was our honeymoon. Had a great time. All you can eat and drink. Don't go if your trying to loose weight or have been to any AA meeting recently.

costa rica is excellent if you do not want to sit on the resort all week.

we went zip lining, horseback riding, volcanic mud bath/spa, a boating river tour, snorkeling, to a rodeo of all locals, walked to another beach along the rocks, and to a reggae festival which had a really cool drug bust.

The woman and I had $800 US for the weeks spending/trips, which is all we needed. I had to do a bit of hussling and deal making, but I made the money be enough for it all (cigars, booze, coffee, and useless trinkets were put on visa)

if you have any questions, feel free to msg me, I can hook you up with a local who'll drive you around as well.

I just got back a few weeks ago, and I'm going again for almost 2 weeks in about a month.

not at work..

i went to the Borinquen resort and canopy tour.

http://www.borinquenhotel.com/

there is one line that is allegedly 450m, you go go for a while.

we stayed at playa panama which was a seculded ****ty beach on the tropical dry side.

playa hermosa is a much nicer beach with a few restaurants around.

playa del coco is more americanized, lots of bars, clubs, kind of reminded me of wasaga beach.

the advantage of playa panama is that we had monkeys near the resort (you wake up from them howling in the morning), we would spot at least one lizard a day (big iguanas too), and all the rooms were villas.

the woman didn't want to spend too much. which is why we stayed in one place and hit up day trips.

i'm going on a longer trip again with a buddy and some americans on spring break. we're hitting arenal volcano, tamarindo (party beach), and monteverde cloud forest.

it was an amazing trip. I'm now a big fan. Tons of wildlife, nothing overly developed, food was very good (especially compared to cuban and mexican 5 star standards), everything is pretty cheap (fake cuban cigars are even cheaper than fake cuban cigars in cuba).

we even hung out at a local's mom's house for a while, and talked to the neighbours (they were all drinking and smoking - and repeating a saying they say to tourists which means pure living)

'pura vida' - i would just say that to locals when i want to stop talking to them, they repeat it always. that's when you wave and walk off quickly.

I would definitely recommend Costa Rica. I've also been to El Salvador, but I found that it wasn't that much of a tourist destination. I went there on business so for me it didn't matter, but I guess if you were to pay to relax somewhere you'd want to go to a nice place like Costa Rica or Barbados.

if you wanna 'try something different', skip all the touristy crap and go someplace with the intention of studying the culture. there are a lot of impressive incan and mayan ruins all through latin america. along the way, you can always do the tourist crap like scuba diving or whatever, but you are absolutely guaranteed to stumble upon a lot more unique stuff off the beaten path (like running into a log cabin restaurant at the peak of a mountain where you proceed to have the BEST iced caff ever conceived, for example) and you're also guaranteed to feel better for it than the other tourists who just went for the ****ing scuba diving and lying on a beach being generally lazy as they could have just done at home.

St. Marteen's = it was meh and it was crazy traffic and full of cruiseship tourists would probably never go back.
St. Lucia = Friggin amazing end of discussion
Aruba = Gorgeous Place

From what ive heard about the caicos islands is that its beautiful but very quiet and boring

and then you can do the typical dr, cuba, and etc but that gets old and boring.

Personally Id say st. lucia but I will be going to jamaica this year so that should be interesting.

if you want something thats absolutely  incredible then Hawaii is the place.

Probably no other place in the world that can compare to having a tropical isalnd get away and having the perks of real malls, a perfect transportation system and etc. It's a no contest.
