Used car purchase..but from where?

Used car purchase..but from where?
I'll be looking into buying a used car in the coming months and I wanted to get an opinion.
If you had a choice of buying a used car from:
a) private listing/seller
b) used car lot
c) used car at a dealer
which would you choose?
Please indicate why you chose what you chose and why you didn't choose the other options.

i would personally go with dealers(known ones) if i'll be buying a used car, so just something wrong with it...i can just bring it back to them. whereas; a private seller is a different story.
dealer = expensive(taxes and their stupid fees), warrantied, lowball them (but no much you gonna get)
private seller = less expensive, no tax(well most of 'em), you can lowball, well that's all i can think of right now
its all up to your personal choices good luck

private all the way
edit: oops, because u can always find nice deals and sumtimes people sell cars real cheap if they cant/dont wanna fix it or if they dont wanna bother with the problem, usually they are all minor
ex. bought a 92 accord exr for $1000 cuz he couldnt get it to start. greased the pulleys and charged the battery, started up perfect sold it for $2500 within like 3 days lol
*shrug* or maybe dealers arent that bad anymore i havent looked but before they seemed like a huge rip off

depends what car, if I was buying an older car (like 5 years+) I would buy it from a private add, no matter what dealer/lot you get it from they won't give you any service if it breaks...if your buying a newish car I'd hit up a dealer

almost every person i know thats owns a used car got an awesome deal buying it from a private seller.....
the seller can write a ticket of any price (reasonable) so you pay the least ammount of taxes (check the black book price).
then the rest of the sale can be "under the table".....
be sure to ALWAYS take your car to a trusted mechanic before you buy it.....
try to find private sellers that do it for a living (selling cars)....they are the ones that buy them from auctions at cheaper prices and then pass on the savings (if you hagel)....
but be very careful in the process.....ur digging through a mine field....u might find diamonds or u might find a mine......

they are both dealers, except one sells new cars too.

to be honest I made the distinction between the two because used car lots carry the stereotype that they are low lifes that are only out to cheat you. This may or may not be true and normal dealerships might be the same or even worse. That's why I categorized them differently.

i would only do private sales and have my mechanic look it over. you can find awsome prices for a car in amazing shape. i made the mistake when i bought my teg from the dealer. they said all the service records were up to date, nothing had to be done etc, and then i find out that the guy didn't do ALOT of serives to it and it cost an extra $1000. so don't always think that because it's from a dealer, everything is in tip top shape.
