video game censorship

This is a little hard to believe.

Some German politician wants to censor violent games to the point that people playing FPS games will be charged.

I think this is incredibly stupid.

Censorship on video games I think is incredibly stupid.

Issues of freedom of expression and freedom of behavior while not harming anyone aside, I really don't see a different on principal between violent video games, books, poems, music, movies. etc.

If you're banning it in one medium, why not all? Unless you're inside of a Muslim or Communist country, how can one ever perceive playing video games as a crime?

I don't believe any arguments about it being a bad influence on children. In order to play a new FPS, you need a computer that will cost at least $1000. Not too many 15 year olds have that kind of money.

If anything look at bad parents who never monitor any of their children's activities.

And why stop at violent games? Aren't car racing games going to influence people into not only speeding, but jumping their cars 80 feet in the air on mountains or tony hawk's pro skater will get kids buying skateboards trying to do a 720 McTwist onto a moving subway train which will lead them to ollie onto a Mexican Bull for a handstand?

Reading news like this makes me want to play a video games where I run around a school shooting students because they said I was obtuse.

How cool would it be to have 'airplane hijacker' as a game. all you start with is a box cutter! You can pick the target for your plane though!

for the first time since i started coming to this site, im going to have to agree with u lol

ppl who blame the worlds problems on violent video games, movies, etc. are just trying to find a scapegoat for bad parenting.

why would irresponisble parents blame themselves for their child shooting up a school? pffft. it has to be the video games right?

**** that.

ive played violent video games since i was 3 yrs old. i haven't killed anyone, nor have i purposely hurt someone physically cuz the GTA series told me so.

ppl need to stop blaming movies, video games, music, etc. and find the irresponsible parents who dont teach their kids right from wrong.

censorship in general is stupid...

although in this example its particularly weak....

I have no problem with putting ratings on boxes, and not letting minors buy games....but banning is to much

censorship might not be a big issue to someone who accepts it as part of their self imposed oppression, but to others it is.

like if i wanted to make a game where you use mohammed and kill the infidels...

HEY look at this!!! we agree on something!!!

But seriously, I do agree. It's your decision (the person who bought the game) to decide whats right and wrong, whats real and virtual reality. If you can't, somethings wrong in your head and you need to go see a shrink...lol.

Also this means censoring your children from what they watch and the videogames they play. Under a certain age you can't always distinguish between reality and virtual reality. monkey see - monkey do....

Now kids will be kids and their gonna see violence every day on the TV, even during the middle of the day...there's not a whole lot we can do about it.

But charging some one for a crime because they created or played a violent video game is total BS.

the moment the term 'censor' appears in our western media...all hell breaks loose. people are paranoid about somebody taking their rights of action or speech away..haha.....i dont see the point in getting so paranoid cuz that is not happening.

largely...not much is censored anyway in our society. with regards to the topic under discussion....research has proven that voilent vdo games have the tendency to negatively influence youngsters on a temporary short term basis.

bruce....your stereotype that such a thing will always be banned in a muslim or communist country is so utterly baseless. do your research or read up on first. there are some countries where you have a high and imo...useless level of consorship but there are others..where it is not the case.

and even if they do...its their form of government and if you disagree with it...its your opinion only. thats all to it...doesnt make them wrong.

hardly 1%-2% of vdo games will usually fall into a category of being extremely voilent...and if that is the case...they should be banned for the overall banefit of everybody.

well, the US is a christian nation, yet you can wear a tshirt of a clown raping jesus while slitting his throat.

...i don't imagine you can do the same with mohammed in Iran or friends of the US, Saudia Arabia.

I don't think Kim Jong Ill would be happy with him on that shirt either.

---

If a kid plays violent video games and goes and shoots someone, something is wrong with the kid, not the video game.

there was such a thing called murder far before pong was invented.

I don't think people who stone unmarried virgins have ever played a violent video game either.

****ed up people do ****ed up things, what they do for personal entertainment won't affect that.

------

i don't include muslim countries because i have a specific feeling against them that i don't have for others, i include them because there is such an obvious clash of culture.

i have a similair disgust of almost all governments and religions.

Exactly!

I think these days they are just looking for something to blame these violent acts upon. Especially since there is so much violence in the media these days...

But I do believe our society is somewhat de-sensitized(sp). we see/ hear about murders all the time and then we go play grand theft auto and kill some more ppl...

But I don't think these games are the reason for the murders they blame on the games.
