I wouldn't touch it. I was going to buy a 98 GTI, then changed my mind for many reasons.
My friend has a 98 Jetta GT, the thing is piece of garbage, every other week he has it in the shop for repairs, 2-3 times the electrical smoked up and ****ed everything up under the dash. He had to replace that piece for the turn signals and wipers like 2 times already. The list goes on.
They're decent looking cars though, interior is pretty nice and they have a bit of power..

wow, lots of pplz dun like VW's here...obvious reasons i guess..
i thought they were up there on reliability scale...but i guess not, oh well i hope mine isnt a lemon...

vr6 is a nice motor...
1.8T is also sweet but i think id turbo the 2.0L to make power from it, only way to be taken seriously...

the 1.8T is a good engine, but Audi's 1.8T is better, they are prolly made by the same manufacturer b/c isn't VW to Audi as Honda is to Acura? They are both 20 valve design but the Audi's are a little better. I've seen both heads side by side. The Audi's head has larger ports. The 20 valve design seems a little cluttered to me, but i guess i'm just used to honda 16 valves.
Take a 1.8T jetta add a larger turbo, big front mount intercooler, BOV, chip the ecu, 3" free flowing exhaust, larger charge pipes and you'll have a pretty beasty car. I've been in a 1.8T Jetta with the things i mentioned above and it was way faster than any honda with that little money invested, but thats the advantage of a factory turbo engine.
Personally i don't like VW's too much. Some are pretty nice looking but i don't like the interiors. The Passat W8 is a sick car and so is the R32.

i dont know about that my friend ever heard about 2l 16v mk1 golf 600HP, vr6 i say is amazing engine, even my old jetta 1.8 8v only prboblem i ever had is clutch cable, nothing big, if you drive a xflow 2l or a 1.8 from back in the days youd be quite supprised how much beating these engines can take.

R32 is a pig. That`s what Clarkson says, so I`ll take his side.

If anything, the R32 should also be of better build quality than other Golfs and Jettas. It wasn't built in Mexico, but rather in Slovakia.

R32 is crazy. R32HPA is just a monster, Mid 11's quarter mile out the box, but its $$$$$$. ANy vw, just make sure its been taken care of. Vr6 is a bulliet proof engine, but the 1.8T is much more upgradable. For example, you can get the REVO flash for the 1.8T and it will jump you to 215HP. The 2.0 is just a plain engine. Dont expect pwr out of it, it runs like a civic SI so you'll have to do a lot of mods to get pwr. If reliablility is the issue, then Honda is the way to go, but as long as the VW's youre looking at are taken care of, you shouldnt have any problems
