Question What would you do??

OK, I have 17" summer tires with rims and steelies with all seasons which are 13". Now the all seasons really suck in the winter time as far as traction goes.

Don't consider money into the factor just think of practicality, would you :

A. Buy a set of snow tires for the 13" steelies and store the all seasons (collecting dust)?

B. Buy a set of 14" or 15" steelies and slapping some winter tires on those and store the 13" steelies with all seasons?

Thanks

Umm Steelies will run you around 100$ at least (24.95+ @ CTire) so why not invest some 15" Steelies? You can always sell your 13"s for real cheap.

Yup, buy 13" winters if they'll clear your brakes... Why would you store the 13s and all seasons when you have summer tires? Summer tires for summer, 13s for winter, where is the confusion? Did I miss something, why buy another set of rims and tires?

@ the moment I use the 17" for summer time and the 13" (w/all seasons) for winter.

I would store the 13" w/all seasons ONLY if I upgraded to either 14" or 15" steelies. This in turn would give me the clearence I would need IF I upgraded my brakes.

Also if I do plan on selling the car in the future, the new owner would have a set of winter and summer tires (w/rims) too.

Just decide what you're gonna do and then buy the appropriate sized winter tires/wheels from there.

Just get a set of M+S tires from Crappy Tire. You can always buy wheel spacers to bring the rim out a bit if you do go to a bigger brake. Spacer come in sizes 1/8"-----> 1" sizes. You won't notice the offset that much with a narrow rim.

My 2C's..........:working:

Is that safe and do you know anyone who has done this?

i thought that big brake kits increase the overall diameter of the caliper/rotor.. so a spacer would help clear the wheel if it's too small to fit anyway?

someone correct me! :P

As long as you get 4 complete turns or more on the nut, it's ok.

huh? If you ment that the diameter would get bigger, then it might not help. some brake kits still fit inside of a 13" rim......but the off set of the rim would hit the rim, and not alow you to mount the rim to the car. In this case, spacers might help.

remember.......steelies are alot thinner in the mounting area than a set of your "summer" rims. If the studs don't alow you to get at least 4 complete turns or more, you can always replace them with a longer stud.

I had to use a wheel spacer on my old car for the rear wheels......it wasn't for the brake though.....my problem was that my tire was rubing on the inside of the well. Drove with those spacers for around 10 years. Never had a problem.......sold them to a TCC member not long ago.

I only had 3 and a 1/2 turns (a little bit more when they were torqued down). This was with my summer rims........the winter rims weren't a problem......8-9 turns.

I had this exact problem and this was my though process.

I have 13's but the rubber is junk. Even cheap rubber is $40-$50 a tire then mount and ballance. I figured it would still cost me ~250.

I decided to look for someone selling winter rubber on steelies.

I managed to track down 14" Black steelies with almost brand new Khumo Power Grips for $200...

The deals are out there, just look around.

If you're unsure, just buy the 14's or 15's. It's not like they're *that* expensive, and they last a long time anyways.
