What would you do?
In this situation..
Pretty basic:
Say you work for a company, and your on a clients jobsite, doing some work, and they offer you a job on the side to make some extra money, that your current employer already does for them, and has done in the past.
Do you take the offer and do the job, then if your boss asks you if the company you were at needed X & Y done, you tell him NO, even though your planning on doing it on the side, and Lie to him.
Or do you just not do it, and say your better off to speak with your boss about getting the work done if need be.
Now take into consideration your on great terms with your boss and really happy with where you are now.
Would you go for the extra work, or just tell em you rather not, cause it doesn't feel right (almost as if stealing you boss's clientell)

thanks for the reply guys. I am on sync with these replies, as I had the same feeling when he first offered it to me. I definately would not like it if someone did that to me as well, and I am the type that cannot live with myself knowing I did something like this.
I pretty much knew I wouldn't do it, just wanted to see if I was out on a limb or something, but this sealed the deal.
Edit: Money is not an issue at all. I am the type that likes to help anyone and doesn't expect payment, so I would have done this for free for the guy, but thats besides the point.

I used to take on side jobs all time because my boss was a ***** and no respect.....I then worked for a company where my boss was a stand up guy and treated his employees well i never took any of these jobs. I'd feel bad if i did because he just started the business and tried to make money like any of us.

legally he can sue you and screw you over twice as hard if you did that to him.
btw lets not forget what if this is a test? what if your boss made the client ask so he can find out which one of him employee's are loyal or not.
gotta think about it that way too.

same thoughts as premiumdude with a little twist.
i would accept the job and then tell my boss that i only said yes cause i was caught off gaurd and it was all awkward n shet. then i would explain to my boss that i gave it some thought and i could really use the extra money since there's some tough times right now, and if he could be so kind and allow it to happen, i would be forever greatfull.
if you had good rapore(sp) with your boss then he/she would have sympathy for you and at the same time since you already said yes you're kinda obligated and so your boss would allow it.

We live in a nation, where everyone capitalizes off of each other. Their is nothing unethical about "dipping your hand into the pot" once and a while. You have to consider whether the company that you work for is paying you an adequate wage in proportion to their profit they make.
I don't know your job circumstances, but every employer I have worked for has not had my best interest at stake. I have never felt loyalty to any company.
Does your company give you benifits, and a fair wage? Do they entrust you with job freedom and/ or sensitivecompany information?

i would bring the situation up to the boss and tell him that i need to make some extra $$ for whatever reason and see if he can set something up, if not tell him you're going to have to do some side work for one of the clients.

it's a conflict of interest Matt...
however that shouldn't stop you from geting your own clients and doing the work on the side.. possibly starting up your own business (leaving the current one) and taking customers, then it's just called competition..
