What would you reccomend for a home router?

Looks like my 6+ year old SMC 7004 VBR is on its way out. I want to go wired again, but if I can find a wireless for similar price I mine as well get that.

What do you guys suggest, or do you know a website that has a bunch of reviews on diff routers etc? I want one that is going to be reliable.

I have had people always say Linksys but after doing some research seems they can be buggy sometimes and problematic.

linksys.

everyone is gonna have a story about how one manufacturer is problematic, but every scenario is different.

where I work Linksys' routers are least returned.
Comparing D-Link and Netgear.

i'm using a microsoft B wireless router...it's refurbished...paid $34.49 including tax for it from factory direct on college street. i havent had any major problems, but i've only had it for 5 months. i had this one problem with it, but nothing the tech support couldnt fix...i think it was just the way i had things set up. but yeah, it works great...just like wired.

i think all the home geared routers are made from garbage.

SMC enterprise equipment used to be very good.. that's all i used to use at the first company I worked at.

I've replaced at least 5 SMC routers for people/clients I got them for in the past... since then... i got a linksys which didn't work well.. now I have a d-link that's working very well... i think it's a d-link... upgraded the firmware... haven't had any problems....

good luck!

I use D-Link G wireless extreme. They had them on sale at Best Buy and they were really cheap. Keep your eyes peeled for package deals with the wireless USB adapter and router. Best value package.

I saw a G wireless router on sale at best buy (I think, maybe futureshop) on sale for $5 after rebates.....it was a brand name one (D-link, or linksys or something),....I would wait for one of those..

I have been using a D-Link wireless one for over 2.5 years now. I paid over $150 for it way back then. Its been great to me, no complaints at all. Now days you can get them for dirt cheap.

I would suggest getting G, as its much faster. The only reason why I have a B one, was because my old laptop was only 802.11b, and now I dont think its worth it for me to invest in a 802.11a/b/g one.

Ive used a linksys as well, I like their security settings better, but a wep encryption password on my D-Link is more than enough.

but isnt G only faster for transfers? B is just fine in terms of speed...i mean the internet is only so fast and B is faster than that.

B is more than substantial when its comes to internet speeds. G helps out on your personal network, you can transfer stuff between computers at crazy high speeds.

im not so worried about wireless, as even when on sale they are still kinda pricey. I only have my laptop on wireless so its not a big deal for me as I don't really roam the house that much with it.. I will keep my eyes peeled though if I do see a deal.

linksys > every router.

linksys is cisco product so its THE BEST.

linksys G 4 port router is really good, i have had it for 3 year now and run 3 compter(wire), 2 laptops (wire/wireless), i also have linksys switch 8 port one.

linksys all the way for home and small business networking.

matt, just get a wireless one. I know you don't mind the wires, but if you ever move someplace where it's not hardwired into the house, it would be nice to be able to put your computer wherever you want w/o having wires to trip over. that's the only reason I have a wireless network as I only have one computer. I didn't want a wire running across the room.

who says anything about running wires across the floor lol. I do networking as part of my job so im used to running and fishing wires down walls and putting keystone jacks on the wall etc. Thats how I have it setup in my house now.

Got a wall jack in my dads office, 2 keystones in my room and one in my bros, all into the attic then down to a patch panel in the basement and an 8 port switch.

But your right maybe I do want wireless, now just gotta keep an eye out for good sales

I went thru 3 routers before I finally got to the linksys wireless, which out of all worked the best in terms of stability overall.

Linksys and D-LINK are my choices. Both run really we'll and stable.
