ok looks like I am going with a Linksys Wired router for now, if I can get it cheap. I have been looking around and found some decent deals, nothing great on the linksys WRT54G as of yet.

So my setup is going to be a linksys Wire router, and I am going to pick up a Wireless G access point from linksys in the future for laptop needs (if I get a laptop for xmas). This would actually work out better for me anyways as I can put the access point upstairs in open view to get the most signal strength. If i picked up a wirelss router it would be in the basement in the corner.

Honestly I would just spend the money on one wireless router vs. two items.

Futureshop / BestBuy usual have some decent sale on Linksys routers.

If your interested I have a old Linksys 11MB wireless router and USB network card I might be looking to sell for cheap. I'm thinking about upgrading to a Linksys SRX

I myself like to have things clean and simple. Why have a bunch of stuff with wires running everywhere when I just have one box, limited wires, etc

as for the wire issue, it doesn't matter for me, I already have all of that stuff run. Plus having an access point in the area where the computer will be, instead of the basement makes alot more sense.

I used to work for d-link and I would not recommend it because the products are unstable. Some of the routers and nic cards that we used in the lab always go down.

I don't own any D-Link products because I know better but my buddy has the DI-524 and he always has to reboot it because it would crash for reason.

If you need help setting up your home network don't bother calling the tech support line because you will just be brushed off. The techs don't really care if your issue is resolved because the company's objective is to get the caller off the phone so the company can make more money by answering more calls. If the techs dont get off the call in a certain time then they get in trouble for it. So the techs come up with lame excuses to get customers off the phone. This line is my favourite: "Unplug the router for a half hour to reset it and if it doesn't work give us a call back".

The way D-Link runs things makes me glad I don't work there anymore.

I'd definitely recommend the Linksys. I don't have a Linksys, but everyone that I know that has one are happy with it.

I don't suggest SMC either because I've had two router RMA. Getting the RMA was the biggest b!tch too.

never had any of these problems. my router has been rock solid since the first day and tech support was very nice in helping me set up an encryption.

trust me i do networking 24/7 lol with real routers, and linksys is cicso product and you can find whole bunch of after market os software for the router which will give you more options and i mean tones more.

lol linksys is kidy router try programming 3600 series cisco router with adtran fiber link connected to it, not to mention all the acls.

damn i sound like a netwroking freek.
