Even back in El Salvador, I would never leave my house after dark and IF I ever had to, I would be with my dad or someone else. It's pretty scary at night.
We carried this at all times.

varadero is pretty safe.. havana you can run into some undesirables.. two guys were following us around until i made a scene.
another guy walked up in my friends face and wanted money "get the **** out of my face" sent him off...
Cuban's will get messed up if they screw with tourists and get caught... that being said.. their government at the same time will not let you exploit them or hurt them.
i get into trouble all the time.. and i've had none in varadero.. you'll get guys asking you if you want weed, coke, girls, whatever, just better to ignore them or tell them absurd things.
one guy kept sniffing his nose when people walked by, i assume that was his way of offering coke.

i am gonna buy a $30 CD player with speakers and smash it/sell it or give it away at the end of the trip.. iPod is another thing to worry about if you're drunk, on the beach, and want to go swimming.

yeah.. buy a cheap portable boom box (make sure it can run on 220V)... you can sell it to one of the locals for some profit at the end.

but yea def investing in a lock for my suitcase to put our stuff in when were out of the room ..
