I spent a lot of time in the attic when renovating my house in the summer, but I did it the smart way... I gutted the house, and re-did everything including electrical, HVAC, plumbing, roof, insulation....

it's amazing what garbage ppl leave in their attic Cost me $2K just to throw out all the construction waste and crap...

I want to run a cat5 cable from the basement to my room up 2 levels. Not sure how hard that'll be. I was thinking running it rhough the heat ducts...no way I can get in my attic.

Jaysi use the cold air duct... since the air is cold it's better for the wires and they ussually head all the way up...

jaysi, that's a good way of doing it... a cold air duct would be better though. My house has CAT5 cable running north, south, east, west, up and down through the house. Wiring it was a bitch, but having all the computers networked is worth the effort. We ended up using the cold air ducts wherever possible to run the wire.

wireless networks kick ***!!!

i haven't bothred to run stuff upstairs yet cuz i just work from the basement, maybe eventually i'll run stuff upstairs, but for now the wireless is good enough, esp to save me all the trouble of running wires...... although it's not that hard, i installed security systems for almost 6 months and for that you have to learn how to run wires ALL over the place, some of the places seem impossible, but if you look at it more creativley it becomes really easy...

you did it the smart way tho! up through the air vents to the attic and then down through the walls, 10x easier than anything else....

yes an unfinished basment helps alot because finished basements usually aren't finished to builder specs cuz many times they're half *** jobs and have pipes running every which way through the ceiling, but if you do the airvent bit, you can drop down almost anywhere you want, up to the attic down to the upstairs and then down to the main floor.....

I installed alarms for ADT, did mostly private house stuff, some of the houses we did were soooo rich and huge, one house i had to do had an indoor full size pool! they let me swim in it and fed us on our breaks, we worked for like a full week there!
and i also did a bunch of their corporate stuff too waaaaay up north in the boonies, new big warehouse style stores.... like CT or something like that, i donno what it was exactly... good experience tho, and i got the tools at a discount so that was alright too

who did you work for?

smaller company called Cairn Control Systems CCS

were more residnetial but we've done a few larger places like Tilly Endurables and this large furniture place around princess auto (forget the name).

Were focussing now on surveilance and web based monitoring. Its kinda cool to be able to log in from your home comp and check whats going on at your warehouse etc.

ya, we had a bunch of stuff that was just starting up as i left (it was amazing pay but rediculous hours) it was all about total remote control houses, you could unlock doors turn on lights, either from your remote or from any web enabled comp...

Ive wired my house with both wired jacks, and wireless. Kinda running wall plates + cat 5 cable accross my attic, into about 3 rooms. It runs like a charm

I did my house in cat 5 with wallplates... Its so nice, especially with the laptop, just plug into the wall anywhere in the house... I considered the wireless setup, but I couldnt find anything over 40mbs, which is wayyy toooo sloooooow for the stuff I use my network for... I need at least 100mbs to be satisfyed which no affordable wirless can produce...

Wireless is the way to go tho if your not doing any big file transfers... Once they get 100mb wireless routers under 200$, cat five will slowly fade away...
