Is there actually a difference between the coupe and hatch corner lights? If so, how much of a difference is there? Aren't they interchangable?

Most of the front end (including the corners) of the 5th gen coupes and hatches are interchangeable. Taillights on 5th gens are interchangeable between the sedan and coupe.

So when people are posting up corner lights for sale, or if someone is looking for corner lights, why do they need to specify if it's for a coupe or hatch? That's what's confusing me. I always assumed that they were exactly the same.

If they're posting corners for sale then just make sure they're for a coupe or hatch and NOT for a sedan.

exactly.. the sedan is the odd ball for corners (found out the hard way)
same as you have to watch out on the M3 style mirrors from certain companies CHOUGH*Ractive*COUGH since they won't go on the coupe..

The curve along the back of the light is different.
