Considering that this is a honda fourm.

The brake light in the dash or the tail lights?

If it's the light in the dash - low brake fluid or other braking system failure. Not sure about the park brake being on since it's a vw

If it's the tail lights.. Check the brake light switch on the pedal???

Ur friend has 2 options ..
1. Sell his VW and get something that is worth the $$ ie. HONDA

OR

2.get used to these type of small stupid eletrical things happening to his VW and get a new credit card with a high *** limit cause the problems will only get worse from there

ya when i was first lookin at cars i was infomred that u have to stay away from the 99 models cause therewas a 1st and 2nd edition .. and its hard to determine without proper inspection to make sure everything was changed that was faulty .. my soulution .sell it or trade it for an EK !

What a coincidence, I was behind a Jetta the other day and the brake lights were on the whole time I was behind it. Must be a common problem with them?

funny... this is a Jetta specific problem, not Golf/Beetle, even tho they all use the same brake light switch. My bro's 99.5 Jetta had the SAME problem when it was new and it was replaced under warranty. My dad's 00 Golf has not had this problem yet.
