i'd like to know this as well...and if it is possible, would it be possible to do it to an older car? i have some clear coat peeling a bit around the door mouldings and antenna...wondering if it's possible to just clear coat the car or if repainting the entire car would be necessary

no you don't have to redo everything, you can do more coats of clear on top but you have to prep it properly.. are you doing this yourself?

i don't see why you couldn't shoot more clear.....just don't burn through to the base when prepping. But as an FYI: more does not = better in terms of gloss.

Instead, why not just polish the clear to bring up the gloss again? Unless its super oxidized....but i can't see that happening on a recent paint job.

-- if your clearcoat has been peeling away....the base is most likely oxidized...depends how bad, you may have to re-shoot the entire panel/car if spotting in paint doesn't help ie. matching up with the rest of the car.

I'm afraid i have no clue on older paint....my guess is there may be adhesion problems due to the paint being oxidized/contaminated for so long....but thats just a guess.

If your clear coat is peeling then the base wasn't preped properly. Depending on what company of paint was used eg. PPG Dupnt etc.. Each company has a different activators and binders and what not. Regardless of what name brand was used, to reclear areas like that is not a big deal on a new paint job. Since it's a base clear job obviously, you have to wetsand the bad area making sure you dont break through the paint. To reclear that area is called "blending" where you go a little further onto the better area to match up the clear as best as possible. Then when the clear cures, a good buff can seal the new clear w/ the old giving you a seamless job.

I own a performance shop aswell as a body shop/custom body work, so I deal w/ this everyday.

Did I help out w/ enough?
