light dimming while driving

Hi everyone

I have a problem with my light. while I am driving on the highway....my headlight and console lights start to dim (almost till you can't see nothing at night) for 5 - 10 sec and It will come back up again....not consistant everytime but it is a recurrent problem...any suggestion would be helpful...dealership has been contacted and they check "everything" and said nothing wrong with it.....so I am stuck with this problem....please help.

guessing its a ground fault... start checking grounding points for the illumination circuits. the locations can be found in the helms manuals.

Since you have a 88 Civic, your grounds are most likely rusted, corroded. You should think about replacing your 18 year old grounds with new grounds.

I am going to change my 13 year grounds in the summer.

Could as well check the battery because the battery gives power to the alternator. So check everything in case

Check your ground as others have reccomended but I can almost 100% gurantee you that the regulator inside the ALT is pooched, this is something I have alot of experience with, especially on yours and my generation civic (88-91). I fried 4 alts in 2years, all voltage regulators, reason being the maximum output of those alts is something like 60 amps which is barely enough to run the car when you got all your accessories on let alone anything else such as a stereo as I ran. BTW I would get the fixed quicktime before those voltage spikes go so high that they start damaging the cars factory electronics, happened on my buddies 88 hatch.

i had the same problem back a year ago... my lights did the dimming thing and would go bright as well... it was my alternator that was causing the problem.
