Thumbs down D17A2 Reliability

Just wondering about any realistic issues with this unit. I know the production run was a laughable short one before the R came out.

My current issues is I blew the headgasket on mine. WHAT A BUNCH OF SH*T!!! Either that or my valve train blew a huge load under the cover.

I literally just rolled over 100k, and BOOM there goes the HG... well there was no boom, the heater didn't work too well, once I looked into it, lo and behold. Jizz in my motor.

BOOO! BOOO! BOOO!

That useless extended warranty better cover this mess....

outside of my digression are there any outstanding issues with this motor?

same issue, change it!

I had a similar issue with a d17a1, the intake maifold and head blew at 90k. warrenty DIDN't cover ****..... fastest solution i found was change it. I got lucky and found a jdm d15b coil version, car was off the road for 3 days, cost approx $500.....Good luck!

Well, Acura is covering it. My "super" extended warranty is good for everything up to 160,000km (except brakes and clutch etc). They gave me an 09 CSX to drive around in until its fixed.

This is just frustrating, 100k and a head gasket. It just went through its large 96k service at the dealer I bought the car from.

My wifey's D17A1 in her 02 civic is working fine with double the mileage (hwy driving).

Bah, this car is probably going to fall apart on me. Alliston asm must be drunk
Problems to date
-fuel door would not pop open, faulty mechanism
-rear defroster malfunctioned
-antenna malfunctioned - would not boost radiowaves = poor reception
-Dash lights burned out (understandable but still gay, use LED's)
-Blown HG

The BEST part about this is that I've only had the car for less than 5k. In 3 months all these issues have arose. It's an '05 EL btw....

Well, the engine builder they sent my head off to is actually the engine builder I use. I stopped by to look at my head before he got into it. But, knowing Matt (3rd generation engine builder) he already had it finished and packaged by the time I got there.

We discussed the head, (1st time I have seen a D17 head, the inside and off the motor at least) the condition it was in when it was brought over, and how much work was entailed.

The head was apparently in good condition, VERY little carbon deposits, and 5 thou on the head re-surface. It blew the gasket on both #1 and #3.

On a side note the intake ports are PUNY, almost the same as an L15 (fit motor) I recommend a good port with a better intake manifold. That should increase the VE.

We discussed the volume of work that he has done on these heads. Evidently I am one of the few. Very Few. Matt does the Local Acura dealership, and one from Burlington and both local Honda dealers. He has seen "less than a handful". Hopefully that makes the rest of you D17 drivers feel more comfortable about your vehicle.

This whole situation has me confused, I mean I know I am an aggressive driver but I let my car idle in my driveway until operating temp when it is cold outside. Also, when the motor is cold I part throttle only up to ~3500 until it reaches temp.

Beyond this, I had a meeting with the GM at the dealership this morning. He was responsive, and I appreciated the time he spent with me.

Also, I do not like the new CSX, the A pillars block waay to much of what is in front of you. Esp pedestrians crossing the street. (no I haven't hit anyone yet)
