noise in engine when i step on gas or go uphill
I sometimes hear a noise when i accelarate or go uphill.
The best way i can describe it is (small rocks in a pen being shaken)
My car is a 98 civic coupe approx 200,000km.
Does anyone know what this is? i know for sure its not the heat shield, the noise comes from the engine.

It may be detonation. I'd pull a plug to make sure it's not.

Detonation almost sounds like leafs russling from the firewall.. that's probably the best way I can explain it

 

i'm willing to bet you need a tune up (plugs, wires, cap and rotor, ail filter).

Thats pretty much how I describe detonation (shaking rocks in a can) and its most likely to happen while accelerating and under load (going uphill).

I'd also check and adjust the ignition timing while you're at it.
