Poor Acceleration Bad Gas Mileage HELP!
hey guys,
So..i've read most of the posts here that correspond to my problem, but I feel i have done all of this already.
I have a 98 civic EK hatchback CX model
Engine has 140,000.
My car struggles going uphill, it wasnt like that before. The gas pedal feels very stiff even when i floor it, it hesitates to accelerate.
I used to get 500km on a full tank, now i get 350km if I'm lucky. This is without using heater, max speed at 120km/h
So far, I have changed the spark plugs, wires, air filter, cleaned the throttle body, checked the timing...oil change, tire pressure checked.
There is no check engine light on my cluster.
One thing that I find strange is that my cluster doesn't show if my gas is nearing empty as the gas light never comes on even when im running low, could this be related to my bad gas consumption?
can my o2 sensor be bad without throwing a CEL?
thanx for your replies.

The o2 sensor can be "slow" and not throw a CEL, but that shouldn't cause significant issues, other than emissions.
Did you check the distributor cap and rotor? If they are badly corroded, it can cause problems.
Any exhaust leaks or vacuum leaks?
Your low fuel light hasn't come on probably because you haven't let it get low enough. Mine wouldn't come on until the needle was pretty much on the empty line.

i checked for exhaust leak and vacuum leak, everything seems good.
This is the thing, I drove my car even after the needle passed the empty line, then when i turned off my car and tried starting it back up, the car kept stalling until i revved and started it up, which means the gas tank was on empty, but no lights came on.
good thing you mentioned the distributor...the initial problem with the car was the distributor cap...one day as i was driving the car, it completely shut off on me, it was the a bad distributor. I've changed the distributor and the CEL went away and the car is now driving but with poor mileage and lack of power.

hey, i was having the same problem with my d15b (which should burn alot of gas... at all) so i did my spark plugs, wires the hole bit. finally i thought of my one last option, Bad fuel injectors so everytime i filled up for a couple times i put lucas fuel injector cleaner in my tank which made my car run a bit better, well alot better from what it was with the new spark plugs and what not,
but try that its like 10$ a bottle buy a few and put one in each time you fill up, and if you still have the problem i would say look into getting new fuel injectors
hope that helps...

Kawasaki...thank you so much, finally some replies...I will try this...this weekend, and i'll let you know if that shows any improvement on the gas mileage.
and Kickz...I have no mods on the car at all.
