when a timing belt breaks d16y8

Buddy has a 1999 ac el premium and while driving at low speeds not that it matters, car shut off and wont start again. Starter cranks but car wont fire. I assume the belt broke as its at 280km and he doesnt recall ever changing it. Anyways Can the belt be replaced or does the motor need to be swapped? Im not looking to upgrade but would go with another d16y8 if I cant do the belt and water pump. I was planning on checking the distributor but didnt wanna do it in front of him as he told me to give him $500 for the car and if I determined it was something other than the timing belt thr price would change, so Im going worst case scenario here

Thanks in advance

belts snap all the time and the motors are fine. But on any occasions it does ruin the motor.

You won't know untill you slap a new belt on. Usually if u sit there and crank it forever you will end up bending a few valves.

Worst thing you could do is turn the ignition over....Like the guy in the abovr thread said you can do some major va;ve damage that way.
If its a belt its a easy fix.

my belt broke on me at 4000rpms in 5th cruising on the highway and luckily my engine was fine (b16 with the head milled a bunch and stage 2 cams), my OEM honda belt that i replaced only had 50,000kms on it when it broke.

My old B16 EF broke a belt shifting from 2nd to third and messed up a few valves.
It was brutal.

I need to do mine this winter, did you replace yours with another OEM belt or did you go with an aftermarket one from like Toda or something?

actually, I used the cheapest belt I could find, I thought every valve was going to be bent b/c of how much I milled the head and the fact that I'm using stage2 cams...also when I pulled my car over to the side of the highway, I cranked it over a bunch b/c I didn't know my timing belt was messed up....so I'm REALLY surprised no damage was done to my engine. Its been over 2 years and 50,000kms since i've been using this cheap timing belt.
