95 4dr dx sedan.. motor problems?

ok so I have a friend with a 95(i think) civic sedan (dx special edition) 4 door... it recently starting making a pouting noise and sounds like its dying... it is shooting out black and dark smoke and starts to get a bad stench in the car....
just wondering is the motor done? what do you guys think it could be? and how much to cost to fix.. its all stock..
thanks

seems to me like hes burning some oil. If it were me, id find an si swap or just a plain d15b7 and swap that in its a fairly simple swap and it would probably be your best way to go.

sounds like missing and backfiring.... thats no reason to start tossing motors around. start with a comp test and if it checks out, then proceed with a good tuneup and once it's running good run some seafoam through it.
