B18b1 to a B20?

This is more of a question to steve but if anyone else has input i would appreciate it. I was wondering what parts i would need to turn a B18B1 into a B20? I know id need to have the sleeves bored to 84.5 and get the pistons but what else is different between the 2 engines? are the heads the same, crank? rods?

Just looking for a little info on a side project im looking at doing for my "beater"

well the b18b and b20b use the same crank, rods, head.
And you can't just bore the engine to 84.5mm from 81mm you would have to get 84.5mm sleeves put in. It would be more practical to just get a b20.

damn, i thought u could bore the stock sleeves to 84.5? Basically i have a spare B18b1 but im not sure of the condition of the inside so i was thinking of doign a small inexpensive project to make it a or rebuild the motor into a fresh B18b1

if it's for a beater, just pick up a B20 shortblock and swap it in. no use wasting time and money turning a B18 into a B20 when a perfectly good B20 is available right from Honda

well i have a B18b1 sitting in the back of my hatch right now and im not sure what kinda condition it is in internally so i figured if im gonna open her up i might aswell get a 2.0L?

IF i was to rebuild the motor to a B18b1 i would have to get the block bored to 81.5 and get oversized pistons or rings correct?

yeah steve i may go with a 2.0L but at the very least im gonna wanna rebuild the engine and put it in my eg hatch. It is actually a B18A1 so its an older motor but it doesnt look too bad yet. What would be the best way to get an idea of how the engine is as far as condition internally?

Im thinking this

B18B1 into 98 Coupe turbo (forged pistons, rods etc later on)

B18A1 into 92 hatch (rebuild the motor to a 2.0L or overbore to 81.5 ?)

hey don't your remember the "stay silent on the price or a cut your ***** off" contact you signed?

he bought the engine off me for 5 bucks. How did I aquire the engine? I helped a shop move locations and was given it because they sold their project car too me. I'm usingt he car for another use and the engine was free so I made 5 bucks off it.

Chris post up a picture of the broken part on the block to make sure Steve can fix it.

So the engine was in that multicolor snowbank of urs?

Thanks again for selling me hte engine Jay, even if the engine is completely useless fro some reason I can still tear her down and get the experience doing that.

How much are engine stands usually guys?

not bad, its sitting in an 18inch tire right now. Not the ideal place to take apart an engine I dont think.

So what would you guys recommend I do. I wanna keep the project cost down so ill prolly look at either used parts or aftermarket replacement parts that are cheaper than buying oem ones.

So should I go with a simple 2.0L or just rebuild to basically stock B18A1 specs or maybe up the compression ratio with some pistons?

Steve what would you recommend I do. I dont wanna spend huge amounts of cash on this as its for my beater car. Basically what i want is something thats quick, runs on 87 octane, something reliable with a good amount of torque like a stock B20 has. If you think i should sleeve the block and get some aftermarket pistons i might be willing to do that. But also im thinking maybe build the engine with all parts that i find awesome deals or that are "donated" to the project lol.
