Burning Smell

Hey dudes...

I have a D17A1 engine.. and when I drive in 3rd or 4th gear at higher revs (5000 RPM straight through to 6500).. and keep accelerating, I smell this burning smell coming from my air vents. It smells like burning rubber or burning engine oil... or burning SOMETHING. I dunno what.. but something's burning.

Can anybody tell me what the smell is and/or is that a good thing or bad thing or a neutral thing?

My engine oil is 5W-20.

lol. Well.. I was following a Neon at the time when I smelt it today.

But on a serious note... what do you guys think? My oil's burning in my engine?

It's a brand new car.

Next tme you fill up your gas tank, check the oil.......wait about 5 - 10 min before you check to make sure the oil settles to the bttom of the engine......also make sure the car is on a LEVEL ground.

If it needs it, fill it up to the proper level. Then go drive.

The next time you go to fill up, repeat the above. If the oil has gone down to between the 2 dots, or lower, you are burning/losing oil somewhere.

Most Civics should be able to go around 1000 km before they start to see a change in oil level. Some can go even farther.

I haven't had the car long enough to see how well the enging is when it comes to burning/losing oil. But from what I have seen, it looks pretty good.

Also remember that the harder you push the engine....
(5000 RPM straight through to 6500)..
The faster it will comsume oil when compared to someone that drives/shifts at 3000 - 4000 rpm's.

My engine uses 5W-20 it says.

There is no oil leaking out of exhaust. My exhaust does not have ANY carbon powder on it.

Any more suggestions?

Are you aware that your car has two passenger compartment air filters?

If they haven't been replaced yet, that may have something to do with the smell. They filter the air before it goes through your blower fan.

or... if you've had an oil change done recently, it could be old oil burning off the exhaust. (when the oil filter's removed, oil runs over the pipe below).

Thought I'd stop by and give you all an update on my problem...

buff'n'stuff have done some tests and we concluded it was probably both the Lancer and Neon burning oil that made me smell that... OR it was the remaining oil close to my manifold that was burning up as I was accelerating (as I recently had an oil change).

I checked my dipstick yesterday and it showed no traces of any oil level loss.. as of yet.

it's probably oil that spilled onto your exhaust when you had the oil change. keep note of the prob and if it still occurs, just drive it to the dealer and let them figure it out.......good luck
